However, if the officials judge that the defender's movement into the zone (even if brief and followed by retreat) caused the immediate offensive reaction, the foul stands as a neutral zone infraction. This prevents the defense from "baiting" false starts without consequence. Key Factors Officials Consider - Timing of the reaction: "Immediately after" the defender exits could still be seen as caused by the initial entry, especially if the offensive player is reacting to the perceived threat from the encroachment. - Close proximity: Defined as within about 2.5 positions of the defender (e.g., adjacent linemen or the QB in certain setups). - This is a dead-ball foul—whistle blown immediately, play stopped. - Penalty: 5 yards on the defense, down replayed. ### If No Causation Judged If officials determine the offensive reaction was not immediate or not directly caused by the defender's entry (and the defender fully retreated without contact), it could instead be a false start on the offense (5 yards, dead ball).
