Why is no one speaking out for #F1 /#NIW applicants who built their futures, careers, and lives around the rules that were in place when they planned and filed their applications? Immigration is a complex issue, and I’m glad congresswoman @ValerieFoushee is at least recognizing that reality instead of reducing everything to slogans. Go celebrate her and encourage her! The data on high-skilled immigration is actually pretty compelling. One well-known study found that for every additional 100 foreign-born STEM workers with advanced U.S. degrees, roughly 262 additional jobs were created for native-born Americans. That’s about 2.6 jobs per skilled immigrant worker. This is not a handout or a freebie. It’s common sense economics. If America educates top STEM and medical talent at our universities, then forcing them to leave immediately after graduation while competitor countries recruit them makes very little strategic sense. However, the hold remains in place for other applicants, particularly those in #STEM fields applying through the National Interest Waiver (#NIW) category. This distinction raises an important question about the underlying rationale. If national security concerns were the primary factor, one would expect consistent treatment across similarly vetted groups. Alternatively, the current policy may reflect workforce or sector-specific priorities. If the latter is the case, it may be worth reconsidering whether NIW applicants—whose contributions and qualifications have already undergone rigorous evaluation by USCIS—should also be eligible for similar consideration.
