Michael Collins passed away on April 28th, 2021. While Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin were on the moon, Collins was in the Command Module, orbiting the moon by himself for 28 hours. He is often referred to as the "forgotten" astronaut. While half a billion people on Earth watched as Armstrong took his first steps and uttered his famous words, Collins was on the far side of the moon, cut off from all communication. "I had this beautiful little domain. It was all mine. I was the emperor, the captain of it, and it was quite commodious. I had warm coffee, even."
The most interesting photos ever taken: historydefined.net/must-see-photo…
@fasc1nate 1984: Possibly the most terrifying space photograph ever taken. NASA astronaut Bruce McCandless floats untethered from his spacecraft using only his nitrogen-propelled, hand controlled backpack called a Manned Manoeuvring Unit (MMU) to keep him alive.
@fasc1nate The moon landing is said to be staged . Technology now should be able to but they’ve not done it again . Funny .
@fasc1nate NASA: “Not since Adam has any human known such solitude as Mike Collins…” while he was without communication around the dark side of the moon.
@fasc1nate Michael Collins, the forgotten astronaut of Apollo 11, who waited for Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin above the lunar surface and was the one who brought them back to Earth safely. He never stepped on the moon.
