i wish i could give specifics the way jeff did in his original post on merch cuts, but i'm too afraid of being blacklisted in an industry i'm still new to and that i still love very much. maybe i'll get jaded and used to it, but i would rather there be some change instead.
i stopped asking for sales numbers on merch i've done because when i think about how little i'm paid vs. how much money my art generates, it makes me wanna stop doing this. i love my job & i'm so happy to help bands support themselves. but i'm getting paid very little to do it.
props to every band speaking out about exploitative merch cuts and i really hope change comes from it. i also hope somewhere down the line a conversation can be had about merch design rates and how exploitative that part of the industry is too, it's hard out here for all of us.
people often say to me "i grabbed some of your merch at the show, i love supporting you!" and it's so, so sweet. but my dog i do not see a penny of that money, ever, not even when my designs are making hundreds of thousands, sometimes more, for a tour
