Tom Hanks discusses never being taught about the Tulsa Massacre
@etanthomas36 @tomhanks Black history is American history. It's time we acknowledge the supremacy that started with the founding fathers.
@etanthomas36 @RexChapman @tomhanks I graduated from Tulsa Public schools and was never taught about the Tulsa Massacre.
@etanthomas36 @RCstoryteller @tomhanks Book by a family friend who felt the same way when he learned of it: amazon.com/Burning-Tulsa-…
@etanthomas36 @RexChapman @tomhanks ... or the Ocoee Massacre
@etanthomas36 @tomhanks Honestly I didn't know about it until I watched episode 1 of Watchmen and said "Hang on. Did this really happen?". We never learned it because white people dont want to "feel bad". We should feel bad even if we weren't directly responsible. You make changes when you feel bad.
@etanthomas36 @tomhanks Same. I didn't know about it until I was watching the Watchmen and looked it up.
@etanthomas36 @tomhanks Yep. I honestly didn’t know about it until the Watchmen show.
@etanthomas36 @winga222 @tomhanks LOVECRAFT COUNTRY, though fantasy is included, is the most shocking and horrifying depiction of the true black experience I have ever seen. The sundown town! The Tulsa Massacre! The diner where it might cost you your life to eat! The Safe Travel Guide! Watch it and weep.
@etanthomas36 @RexChapman @tomhanks It certainly was horrific... But, there is also a lot of misinformation about it. Like, Black Wall Street... That consisted of a movie theatre and about 8 shops, hardly a Wall Street.
@etanthomas36 @michelle_byoung @tomhanks My parents moved us to Oklahoma when I was in high-school. I took a class in Oklahoma History and heard NOTHING about the Tulsa Massacre. Thankfully, after a year we moved back to California.
