I’m the woman in this post ❤️ The full story is even crazier than the headline. Anthem initially denied my everolimus because it’s used off-label for heart transplant, even though I had been stable on it for years and my transplant team said I needed it. I’ve had rejection on other regimens, and tacrolimus caused complications serious enough to hospitalize me. My doctors did prior auths, appeals and peer-to-peer reviews, and I still came dangerously close to running out. It got so serious that my donor Christian’s mom, Mary, offered to pay for my medication herself. She told me that if something happened to me, it would feel like losing Christian all over again. After my story went viral, Anthem finally approved the medication, but then the cost became about $1,500 for 90 days. That’s why I call it a “ghost approval”: approved on paper, but still not realistically accessible. Eventually Warris Bokhari and Mark Cuban got involved, and I was able to get my medication through Cost Plus Drugs with help covering the cost. I’m incredibly grateful, but I should never have needed to go viral, have my donor’s mom offer to pay, or need influential people to step in just to access the anti-rejection medication protecting Christian’s heart. ❤️
