I try to never engage with the sports media controversy dramatics, BUT this one really matters to me. If you’re someone that can’t afford to take unpaid work & are worried about how that might affect your career down the road, that was me too.

I had to pass up on an internship in college that would’ve been a “next step” career-wise, because I couldn’t afford to not make $ for a summer. I thought that saying no to that internship was going to end my sports photo trajectory, and it didn’t.
I lived on my own at 19 and I was never able to take the unpaid, or extremely low paying internships when I was in college and just out, because it would mean quitting the job I had, losing the apartment I was renting, and having to put all my stuff in storage I might not be able to afford or have a place for when I returned. Most of the my classmates I knew who could do them them at newspapers without hardship ended up getting the starting level jobs I never could because I didn't want or could risk to work for free for 3-4 months.
