New Blog Post: From Outputs to Outcomes Your team submits weekly reports on latrines constructed. Quarterly, you scramble to figure out if sanitation actually improved. Sound familiar? Many projects monitor outputs obsessively while often ignoring outcomes. We count what's easy to count, not what matters. It's simple to track training sessions delivered, hygiene kits distributed, and water points rehabilitated. Much harder to track whether hygiene behaviors changed, disease patterns shifted, or quality of life improved. So we generate mountains of output data while outcomes remain mysterious until evaluation time. A WASH project in Eastern Ethiopia discovered this problem dramatically. They had pristine records: 847 hygiene sessions delivered, 15,000 participants reached, 100% of targets met. The mid-term evaluation revealed handwashing rates hadn't changed at all. They'd spent 18 months counting activities instead of tracking change. Match monitoring frequency to expected change: •Weekly: Infrastructure progress, emergency indicators •Monthly: Service utilization, early behavior signals Quarterly: Behavior change outcomes, perception shifts •Annually: Major outcomes, sustainability indicators The difference matters. •Output monitoring asks "how many?" •Outcome monitoring asks "so what?" One takes 10 minutes of counting. The other requires actual analysis - examining patterns, investigating causality, comparing across groups. Your field team probably knows whether outcomes are happening. They just don't report it because the form asks for numbers, not insights. Create space for outcome observations: monthly calls focused on "what's changing?" not "what did you do?" Quality beats quantity.
