The govt is getting into free tax filing (gingerly). propublica.org/article/irs-in… This is a real testament to the power of journalism. @JustinElliott, @paulkiel, @LizDDay & others at ProPublica spent years exposing how Intuit tricks people into paying and lobbying vs alternatives.
@eisingerj @JustinElliott @paulkiel @LizDDay My writing coach says only writers are keeping the word "gingerly" alive. I must say this is excellent use of it.
@eisingerj @propublica @JustinElliott @paulkiel @LizDDay Treasury has offered its pay.gov service for around 20 years now. It lets federal agencies put forms online, calculate fees and collect money owed through a variety of payment mechanisms. It would be simple to put the 1040-EZ online through this existing service.
@eisingerj @propublica @JustinElliott @paulkiel @LizDDay Brilliant work. Hard to believe that most U.S. citizens pay to lodge their tax returns each year. Less hard—when you realise that for capitalism to survive and flourish, it must continue to exploit the people and system from which it feeds.
