JAPANESE GIRLS AT THE HARBOR is one of the surviving pinnacles of Japanese silent cinema. For Shimizu, it also represents a marriage of the modernist style of his silent melodramas with the lyrical tone and open-air location shooting that mark later classics like MR. THANK YOU.

Terrific movie, with certain elements in common with an American pre-code. Especially Yumeko Aizome; she has a small part but I adored her.

JAPANESE GIRLS AT THE HARBOR depicts an ill-fated love triangle among two devoted schoolmates and a careless playboy. Shot in Yokohama, Shimizu's silent is a masterpiece of lyrical modernism. See it May 4 in imported 35mm with live piano by @unpianistique: bit.ly/44l5PxS
This movie may not be good, may even be bad, but you know what? It will be glorious.
Shimizu’s A HERO OF TOKYO (1935) follows the travails of a family abandoned by their grifter father, and the sacrifices made by the devoted mother. In its taut 63-min. runtime, the kids grow to adulthood and contend with their parents’ choices. Sat, 5/4, bit.ly/3w5CwTo
This film moves like a WB/First National precode. It packs more into one hour than most directors manage in three today. Like a Wellman film, it's also a brutally frank social comment. Shimizu's use of dissolves within a single shot to signal temporal change is utterly singular.

Not sure I agree? But let’s go with it. It’s sad that her best performances of this period are in two Arnaud Desplechin films only a very few people outside of France have seen.
FYI, Shimizu's the one in shorts with a cigarette and fedora! Grab 🎟️ for "Hiroshi Shimizu" now! -Part I: The Shochiku Years: bit.ly/shimizu-at-momi -Part II: The Postwar and Independent Years: japansoc.org/Shimizu

“Seven Seas” will launch the Shimizu retrospective this Saturday and the ensuing *all-silent* day includes Shimizu’s searing indictment of early showa-era Tokyo, “A Hero of Tokyo,” and the (extant) masterwork of his silent period, “Japanese Girls at the Harbor.”

The ratio of revelations to screenings in this series is very nearly 1:1. Hiroshi Shimizu was one of the great filmmakers, and for those who’ve seen or plan to see the superb new Hamaguchi, the spirit of Shimizu infuses its bloodstream.

7K Followers 725 Following academic librarian, film zine-er, photography, wrestling. lover of random esoteric interests, bygone media, & rabbit holes 🚨 1930 zine on sale 🚨I realize I am not part of Columbia. I realize that campus situations are usually more nuanced that they appear in the news. That said, I am hard-pressed to think of any university president who has handled things worse than Minouche Shafik.
One difference between this building at Columbia and the US Capitol is that the Capitol happens to be the seat of Congress, the national legislature of the United States, which was, at the time, certifying the results of an election those who stormed the Capitol wanted to void.
You can’t denounce the J6 rioters and then say the Columbia students who occupied a building by force and destroyed property should be immune from consequences. This is the real world.
I used to get all worked up about posts like this, but Twitter has made it so that I just don't care anymore. You're a leftist and want to vote for Trump? Go ahead! Or you want to sit out an election? Your choice! These protest voters usually don't have much impact.
I'm just gonna say it. I think it's important enough that we send a message that we will not support genocide even if it does result in the worst possible election outcome. it's worth burning it all down. it's worth what will happen to my own rights
“Historical data suggests that the election won’t swing on college protests” cuts both ways. They don’t hurt or help. The Vietnam protests were likely not what cost Humphrey in 1968. That was actually the white backlash to the Civil Rights movement.
“The Vietnam protest—-“ Were followed by Richard Nixon becoming President, Republicans dominating politics until the 1990’s, and Democrats shifting towards hard on crime policies. Y’all want to talk about history but don’t want to talk about how it fits together. 1968-1992.
@HeerJeet 3/ But they don’t suggest any demand for crackdown. And regardless the pressures I’ve spoken to speak pretty uniformly that the issue is staying on the right side of major donors. But again, we see both to have professors. Any reporting?
@HeerJeet 2/ antisemitism and harassment of Jewish students while also making standard defenses of right to protest. The precise character od the protests and whether they’ve self policed treatment of Jewish students is complicated and you don’t have to agree with those statements.
@HeerJeet Okay we moved pretty fast from reporting to some professors I can talk to. I’ll note that the congressional hearings were 100% a gop thing so zero to do with the White House. Referring to a “White House condemnation of students” is off. They have condemned …
IMO the reality is that it’s going to be a close election, as it always was going to be, and we’re unlikely to see more than a 2 point swing in either direction from 2020. And the online protestors who currently say they can No Longer Support Biden aren’t likely to change much.
Some of my favorite first viewings in April: Unforgiven (1992, Eastwood) Tess (1979, Polanski) Body Double (1984, De Palma) Drunken Master II (1994, Lau & Chan) Dazed and Confused (1993, Linklater) Moonrise (1948, Borzage)
@zackbeauchamp But @BrownUniversity did call in the police & arrested student protesters. insidehighered.com/news/quick-tak…
Producers, videographers, photographers, reporters, editors — all of them our students. This work has already been published in over 20 different publications worldwide. Their reporting begins here: journalism.columbia.edu/students-cover…. 📷: Duy Linh Tu
No better place to be.
It’s nearly midnight & the @columbiajourn newsroom is buzzing.
My @columbiajourn students are out reporting non-stop: working sources they've built over months, navigating the campus unlike any outsider, and adding much-needed context, humanity and depth to coverage. If you're an editor looking to commission them, get in touch.
Hi, newsrooms: If you are relying on Columbia-affiliated journalists, namely student professionals in various programs at @columbiajourn, for exclusive, inside-campus coverage of protests and events, it is common (industry) courtesy and standard to compensate them for their work.
@HeerJeet Can you point me to any real reporting that says the Columbia admin feels pressure from the White House to crackdown on student protests? Pretty universally the reporting points to the role of donors, which is I think accurate.
@HeerJeet We could start with federalism, the legal status of a private university and the general comedy of saying that Joe Biden is an authoritarian of any measure let alone equivalent to Donald Trump. How’s that?
People have idealized ideas of how these protesters should “effectively” or “appropriately” express their political agenda. Me too. But leaving that to the side, how do university and political authorities channeling their inner George Wallace/Bull Connor/Jim Clark make sense?
The scene at CCNY encampment has grown absolutely out of control. NYPD with riot gear have started to snatch and brutally arresting protestors and throw them in police busses.
childish, irresponsible stuff coming from someone who has the credentials to know better
I was gonna vote for Biden in November -- for labor and also obviously to keep Trump out of office -- but after tonight... Man, I don't know.
@joshtpm there are a lot of folks out there desperate to find a permission structure that allows them to make irresponsible choices
@atrupar Wasn’t he saying a few days ago that he was begging everyone to do the things he insisted on because that was the only way to keep the Democratic coalition together and defeat Donald Trump, which was 100% his goal?
Yeah, let's go straight to fascism, then. That's the ticket.
this is on the watch of a democratic mayor, governor, and president. And they expect to convince voters that we need to reelect them in order to stave off authoritarianism? ...How?
