@katiemcvay I read Little Women the summer I turned 8. In 6th grade I saw it on the classroom bookshelf and thought I'd reread it. That was when I found out what the word 'abridged' meant. Because kids don't want to read the whole story???

@LinguisticsGirl Colander. Los Angeles. It has feet & a rigid form. Strainer is a more general term and seive has no feet and prob made from flexible material.

@sociolinguista I got whichever one was not the most expensive at Costco a couple years ago (e7?). Would pay more for room mapping &/or pet level vacuum. Mine is Dory because she wanders aimlessly but keeps on swimming. When she retires I will replace the same day.

@the_gryphon @abqride OMG! Honestly, I'd've thought not wearing a mask should be enough to get the driver fired. They're eliminating fares now, but I would definitely not ride the bus with an unmasked driver.

@JohannesTEvans @rachelsteenblik I also (even prepandemic) told them to stay home if they were sick, and they didn't believe me. Sometimes I really hate what schools do to people.

@JohannesTEvans @rachelsteenblik Once a college freshman asked to use the toilet during class and I said We're all adults; you don't need to ask. All the students said No, Other profs require it. So now it's part of my first lecture and I think it's so wrong to have to tell people to respond to their bodily cues

I went inside someone else's house today, for the first time in nearly a year. It was weird, and a little bit heartbreaking because I just wanted to give everyone a hug. Everyone was masked and distanced and it was fine, but now I'm sad.

@leahcaitrin In our house this is a two-person job. One holds the cat securely wrapped in a bath towel. The other extends claws and clips them. On good days this takes only a couple of minutes. Then the cat is released to sulk. There is no pleasantness, but a well wrapped cat is less angry.

@sarahshulist It depends on the question (early lg, "have you ever heard", "what's your word") and the questioner (local, US, Europe). I've lived in 4 metro areas in the western US and my parents are from different parts of the US, and trying to pin down influences is hard.
