Wow. Did Dr Dre ever do anything that was original? Sheesh.
Anybody who thinks constant sampling is the sign of a great producer is the kind of person who thinks they can Write a great book at the photocopy machine😂😂😂
From what I’m seeing, Dr Dre is no creative genius. That might be Kendrick Lamar. Actually, Dre is a lot like Drake or Millie Vanilli: Find something that already works and add your twist to it. Yes, hip hop does a lot of sampling, but Dre seemed to grab the whole damn beat and use it for the entire song. That’s a lot different from grabbing a small piece of a melody or verse- I compare it to a rapper who doesn’t write his own lyrics but adds his own style to the way the lyrics are recited
Damn. I coulda been Dr Dre. All I had to do is copy
It seems to me that sampling is basically legalized plagiarism. You pay someone money to use their music, knowing that most listeners won’t read the fine print - so they then spend 20 years saying “That’s a dope beat from Dr Dre.” If you did a survey of hip hop fans and played these beats, most people would say “Yea, Dr Dre did that.” That’s the part that doesn’t feel right to me. It’s almost like having a ghost writer. So, maybe Dr Dre should really be called “Dr Drake.”
Maybe "Beats by Dre" should be renamed "Beats Borrowed by Dre." That might be a better name.
@drboycewatkins1 You just discovered the genre, big dawg?
@drboycewatkins1 I used to feel exactly the same way, but have changed my perspective. True originality/creativity comes from taking things that exist & arranging them in a way that nobody thought of before. That applies to sampling as much as it does to guitar solos or visual art collages.
