I finally wrote something about my time at sail/muddy, the last startup I was at, where we were trying to build a multiplayer browser, and a few lessons that stayed with me. I mostly just hope it’s interesting to people thinking about new ambitious interfaces right now. with AI, some of these questions feel newly relevant again.
I'm surprised we haven't seen anyone execute well on model agnostic managed agents (like Claude Code’s managed agents). It feels like such an obvious thing to build, since all the Claude Code style knowledge work or AI roll-ups will need this kind of infrastructure. They all need to be able to write and execute code to complete more complex tasks required, and in all these cases, you want the strategic benefits of being model agnostic and cutting costs with open source models. Building a managed agent well involves enough sandbox infrastructure, resilient background agents (with things like Temporal), figuring out how to talk back to a legacy system safely (via mcp tools), and stitching it all together properly.

The fact that you “can’t codify taste” always felt like cope to me tbh. Whether it can do new things with taste feels like a different question to me, but most things are remixes of other things.

One insidious thing PM'ing at large companies is that you just get so few reps to train your product taste because the ship cycle is slow. If it takes a quarter on avg to ship a meaningful feature, you get 4 reps per year. At a startup, you can get that in a month. There are
