@OregonRolledA20 My favorite DnD memory is when my wife Sofía had, unbeknownst to me, had Jeff Easley, one of the great great great fantasy painters of all time, paint my character Arkhan the Cruel. But to be honest there's a great DnD memory every week at our games!
@TrashMobMinis There's always story elements that can tie characters together. Maybe they came from the same place or start having the same dreams. Tie their history together by letting them know individually between sessions parts of their backstories. But mostly it just happens naturally.
@optionalrule Hey, as a GM I'm just a voyeur. I'm also the architect of the long-form story. But the players can do whatever they want. That's the beauty of role-playing. If they wanna kill and torture the shopkeeper, they can do that! You can always make them feel guilty for it.
@steinthethird It used to be you could roll up to a store and ask whoever worked there if they have open DnD nights. Call your local gaming store and ask if they know of anyone playing on Zoom or Roll20. And if you know how to Dungeon Master, you'll always have friends.
@StarShinobi Yes. One time we started a game by waking up and realizing we were all chained to each other on a slave barge heading down a river. I was a minotaur so I started head-butting our captors into the water. I thought it was a really ingenious way to start a game.
@SpiralDanward How about a civilization of dark gnomes or dark hobbits? That's just off the top of my head. In my game I wanted something between dragon and draconian, kind of like a tank that could move in, so I created these abominations and a storyline of how they were being created.
@Dimly_Lit It differs from character to character. I've done both. You get inspired in different ways, and that's the beauty of DnD. It's just stimulating and it's so much fun to follow your inspirations wherever they take you. Just be open to whatever comes to you.
@tabletoppaintin Don't be a menace to your own group. I've had people who try to split the group and someone's character dies and people get pissed. It's a team game, play nice with other kids in the sandbox. That said, don't let that get in the way of a great character.
@OneCritWonder I love Dragonlance. I like Krynn. There are books that are companions that give you a fully fleshed out view of the world. It has everything I love about fantasy. With some other worlds it's very hard to get the cannon straight. I've recently begun collecting Dark Sun modules.
@Saeragushi_arts I actually just recently answered this. I got to design a Questbook for the relaunch of HeroQuest. The ending boss is a black dragon I named Venim. You should take that! And for a gem I'd give the dragon a giant amethyst with a magical ability to create light from its inside.
@geekbot No. I think you should take it a step further and film yourself doing the character voices. That way you can critique your performance. Maybe there's some kind of career for you here.
But no I totally practice voices and make note to myself to remember to use them down the line.
@parabasis Growing up I was big into elves because elves have a little bit of magic and a little bit of fighting. 2E Dragonlance: I was a minotaur of course. Nowadays, I love playing warlock. I love playing characters that have tons of options and I love being able to effect the story.
@TurquoiseDagger@matthewmercer@VoiceOfOBrien@ChrisPerkinsDnD There's a fighting style where you can have a second attack, and a feat in which you get to add your damage bonus to attacks or off-hand attacks. So you need the fighting ability or a feat that allows you to strike with two hands.
@MariahInReality It's like being a teacher; just stay a chapter ahead of the class. Read the adventure module over and over. If creating your own, set up story and character arcs that pay off over time. Have fun, understand your players, and prep. Keep a list of names and follow your inspiration!
@SamWitwer A lawful evil character would be better for the party because at least there are rules and collective goals that can be adhered to. They may have other goals but they can play nice within a group. Chaotic evil is like having a gremlin in your group. You'd want to kill them.
@yum_dm In older versions parties had characters at all different levels. In 5th Edition, it's more about the collective story and all the characters level up together. So when someone dies and jumps back in they start on whatever level the group is on. But it's DM's choice!
@CrocsFansOnly Get the Player's Handbook, Dungeon Master's Guide, and a Monster Manual. Make a character. Somebody has to run the game, so if you like storytelling you'll want to be a DM. Then home brew an adventure (write your own) OR get a starter kit. That's how you get into it, brother.
