Most founder and VC types love to publicly celebrate the wins, the product launches, the major milestones... And fair enough! Building new hard tech is indeed incredibly rewarding when things work. Anduril does plenty of celebrating! But what doesn't get talked about nearly enough is how often things *don't* work. Every company building rockets, aircraft, engines, missiles, drones, or any other difficult tech has LOTS of days where something doesn’t work, when a test goes badly, when you thought you got it juuuuust right but womp, not so much. Those days suck, but they are also inevitable on the path to success. Well, Friday was one of those days for Anduril. A solid rocket motor exploded during a test fire at our factory in Mississippi. Most importantly, no one was hurt. The safety systems worked exactly as designed. The team responded exactly the way they've trained to, and damages to our test stand were minimal. By the end of the day everyone was already focused on understanding what went wrong and getting ready for the next test. There's a reason for the cliché "not rocket science" -- because rocket science is actually quite difficult! Friday's test failure is just one example of why. Development testing exists to answer difficult questions before the design goes into production. Obviously we aim and hope for successful tests, but just as obvious, every test failure gives us data. Every anomaly improves the next design. Every test, in the long run, makes the program stronger. Even if Friday sucked (and it did), we take a deep breath and move onto the next one. We'll be back to test firing rockets within weeks. Anduril is continuing to build and test rocket motors weekly, and the production facility remains on schedule. Disciplined iteration begets steady progress, and we're already putting the pieces of our test stand back together for the next test. Onwards.

I thought about replying in private, but after drafting some thoughts to send privately, I decided to put my thoughts out there publicly. This is a classic pattern. When @jason uses the platform of his (widely-followed) podcast to make ad hominem character attacks against someone based on sensationalized and inaccurate media hysteria -- celebrating them losing their careers and making proclamations like (direct quote): "This is a complete lack of moral character and leadership for someone like @PalmerLuckey."... well when Jason does it, it's not a big deal. "It's all a joke everybody, calm down." "I could have said it differently!" Ha ha ha, right J? Everybody needs a foil. With the tables turned, Jason quickly flips to playing the victim. "That's a Photoshopped photo!" (It's not.) You're slandering me!! (glwt claim!) And finally blaming Palmer (who has ~60% fewer followers here, and no podcast) and little me (with 98% fewer followers, and also no podcast) for someone (allegedly) sending Jason death threats. Death threats suck. We at Anduril get more than a few of them. Nobody should be threatening violence at Jason, and neither Jason nor his family should feel the fear of looking over their shoulder worried that someone's taking an internet beef too seriously. Truly sorry you're getting that Jason. However! The next time you feel the urge to grab the nearest microphone or fire off that tweet jumping to conclusions about someone's character, integrity, or moral compass... Maybe just don't. Maybe think for a moment if you have all the details, or if you're dogpiling on someone who can't defend themselves, or if you're causing unreasonable or outsized professional harm to your target. Maybe pause for a tiny moment to think "oh man, that really sucked when tens of thousands of people took a tiny sliver of information totally out of context and overreacted and assumed I'm some terrible, evil villain," and, following that moment of introspection, don't do the exact. same. thing.

Anduril is taking over IVAS, and we don't have time for business as usual. Whatever you are imagining, however crazy you imagine I am, multiply it by ten and then do it again.  I am back, and I am only getting started.

Anduril is taking over the @USArmy's Integrated Visual Augmentation System (IVAS) program pending @DeptofDefense approval. We are now fully responsible for production, hardware, software, and integrating Lattice to greatly expand warfighter capabilities.
