On Wednesday, March 4, the University of Kentucky Police Department will conduct a university-wide test of the UK Alert emergency notification system at 10 a.m. Shortly after, at 10:07 a.m., we will also participate in the statewide tornado drill led by the National Weather Service. To ensure you receive these notifications and stay informed during a real emergency, please take a moment to review your settings: 🔹 Faculty & Staff: You must download and register in the SafeZone app to receive alerts via phone call or text. Employees who haven't registered in the app will only receive email alerts. 🔹Students: Ensure your current cell phone number is updated in myUK to automatically receive text and phone alerts. 🔹Parents & Community: Want to stay in the loop? We understand the unease these incidents create. The safety of our campus is our top priority. The UK Police Department has been aware of and monitoring a nationwide increase in “swatting” calls — false reports designed to trigger a heavy police response. After the call was received, UKPD immediately assessed our robust campus camera system, which consists of over 4,000 cameras, and determined that there was no threat to campus. Officers then arrived on the scene in under two minutes to further confirm that this report was a hoax. UK Alerts are only sent in the event of credible emergencies that require our campus community to take action. Our quick response time and technology enabled UKPD to determine that this was a hoax nearly immediately; therefore, no UK Alert was sent.

At 12:12 p.m. today, @UKPolice and @lexkypolice responded to a false report about an active shooter near William T. Young Library. Police responded in less than two minutes and utilized the campus camera system to immediately determine that this report was a hoax. As such, no UK Alerts were issued and community members did not need to take any action. Police are monitoring false reports of threats at universities across the country this week. The safety of our campus community is our top priority and we will continue to keep our community informed of safety updates.
