Gentleman, your wife is your real backup plan. Make no mistake: life today is tough. Everyone has their own big fish to fry. I understand how we, as men, can be genuinely and rightly concerned about our wives’ engagement with the public. It often comes from protective jealousy, which, by the way, is commendable, both religiously and emotionally. Notwithstanding, as a married man today, your most dependable backup is your wife. This is why you should marry a responsible human being, not merely race for the visually appealing or the tenderly drowsy whom you believe will legitimately appease your concupiscence. Siblings, friends, and relatives are already financially stretched by their own needs and wants. In the event of death, you may be disappointed in your grave to discover that this group of people has abandoned your wife and children. There are examples here and there. It is not necessarily because your family and friends are treacherous or irresponsible, but because they are financially impaired. Quite sadly, they are likely to see your bereaved family as a liability that further strains their income. The generous ones may end up treating your family as second class, for example, for every 50kg bag of foreign rice they buy for their family, they will buy a 25kg bag of local rice for your family. That is still generosity. They simply cannot afford to maintain the two families at the same level. Times are hard, and do not assume bad faith. However, your wife, on the other hand, is your second-in-command. You raised the family together, and therefore, she is more likely to commit her entire time, effort, and resources to ensuring that your children get the very best she can afford, just as you would. The children too wouldn’t feel treated as the second patient that the doctor sees. This is why, in my opinion, you should educate your wife, support her to work, or support her in business. Whatever it takes to empower your wife is worth it. See it as an investment that your children, her children, will benefit from someday. The idea that an empowered woman will disrespect her husband depends on the woman. Poverty can disguise bad character. Money only reveals what was already there. A responsible woman will not disrespect you because she earns. Many women earn more than their husbands and still honour them deeply. Some even help shoulder responsibilities without being asked, while respecting the man’s position as head of the home. These are the women you can leave behind with peace of mind, knowing your family will be well taken care of. May Allah make it easy for all widows and orphans out there. Ameen. It is not easy!
