I don't think Paypal should be able to arbitrarily close down accounts without explanation. But this doesn't stop people expressing their views in public, as @toadmeister claims. It just stops them doing so for money.
@Frances_Coppola @toadmeister PayPal is a private company with no universal service obligation. If we want payments to be a human right, then we should pass the legislation to make it so - I think this will happen, by the way, but with CBDC.
@dgwbirch @toadmeister It does, however, have to comply with the law, and if it discriminates against people in ways that breach UK law, it can and should be sued.
@dgwbirch @Frances_Coppola @toadmeister Financial service providers are not in the traditional sense private companies with no universal service obligation. They are extensively regulated and this includes interference with the normal right of a company to choose their customers.
@dgwbirch @Frances_Coppola @toadmeister If payments aren't a human right, the consequence is theft, or slavery. Ofc, whatever legislation happens with CBDC will be a dog's breakfast, so let's be careful what we wish for.
