Every time the quarterly viral "tech's ethical problems stem from a lack of humanities education" thread rolls around, I wonder if the people RTing it actually know people in high-paying fields where a lot of people have humanities degrees, e.g., law, consulting, IBanking, etc.
@danluu Or, for that matter, that a ton of tech workers studied (either in college or later) various humanities.
@danluu @Noahpinion Compare ‘bad behavior’ stories from a random SV techie and a random Hollywood worker. It’s not remotely close who has more horror stories, and it isn’t SV.
@danluu I did both an arts degree (history) and a science degree (mathematics) and observed no distributional differences in the moral or ethical qualities of my fellow students.
@danluu This is also weird for me. There's a heavy emphasis on "morals are where you come from" that almost entirely ignores the morality of a culture people are currently in, like a current movement can't have its own culture.
@danluu @Noahpinion The idea of teaching humanities is still a good idea. Same with statistics.
@danluu Or if the people RTing it know any humanities either
@danluu This is the first time in my life i've heard studying law is included in humanities. Same with banking or consulting, whatever it is you study to become a consultor. Am I wrong? I always see humanities as history, literature, philosophy, anthropology, sociology, pedagogy, hr
@danluu Or how many of the original fascists/Nazis were humanities types…
@danluu @Noahpinion Anyone who thinks the humanities make you ethical needs to read the background of some humanities grandes. Chomsky on Rwanda, Davis on Jim Jones, Dickie Falk on Khomenei.
