"More than 1,000 children living in New York City shelters left their public schools after their families were forced to move due to Mayor Eric Adams’ policy that limits their stays to 60 days, according to data released by the City Council on Monday." gothamist.com/news/more-than…
@danarubinstein @katie_honan Dana this is horrible, and @NYCMayor is absolutely not the leader this city needs but in all fairness, what should he do? He is absolutely overwhelmed but it’s unfair to solely highlight issues without also highlighting possible solutions and their flaws. That would be productive
@danarubinstein What happened to @DOEChancellor pledge to keep students living in shelters in their schools? Turns out mayoral control trumps good policies for children. Very sad
@danarubinstein That’s life. Think crossing Darien Gap more traumatizing. These families R costing taxpayers $1.5k a DAY. 80% will cost us $250k or more!!! After 2 yrs it’s time 2 return home. Almost none of these families will ever b independent & this insanity could go on 4 yrs
@danarubinstein Illegal immigrants who bring their kids to break laws crossing international borders deprioritized them being in schools. Kinda looks like our govt school closure policies in creating surge in chronic absenteeism in NYC. chalkbeat.org/newyork/2023/9…
@danarubinstein Those NYC public schools are funded by New York taxpayers or foreign countries and their citizens? If foreign citizens must be educated for free then it requires that they pay New York taxes BEFORE arriving here. If u want socialism then understand that resources are limited.
@danarubinstein They haven’t contributed to this country. Not my first priority
@danarubinstein Horrific, but this was happening long before migrants got here. American born children living in our shelter. System have been tossed around like this for years, with little to no warning. They were doing it to non-migrant families at the Row hotel for years
@danarubinstein I’m somewhat sympathetic but tell me more about the education they were receiving back home?
@danarubinstein They shouldn't be here in the first place. They need to leave the country, and if they want to come in, they have to do so legally.
