🚨URGENT: Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya’s life is in immediate danger, Physicians for Human Rights Israel and his lawyer warned Saturday, after a prison visit revealed the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital bearing fresh, severe injuries to his head, eyes, ears, and neck, so disfigured his own attorney initially struggled to recognize him. 🔹Attorney Nasser Odeh, who saw Abu Safiya Thursday at the underground Rakefet interrogation facility in Nitzan Prison, said he arrived shackled hand and foot, escorted by masked guards, struggling to breathe and speak, unable to sit upright, and repeatedly on the verge of losing consciousness. 🔹Abu Safiya told him that after his Supreme Court appeal was heard June 10, four or five guards entered his solitary cell at Ganot Prison and beat him with a hammer and batons, and that since his June 24 transfer to Rakefet he has been beaten daily, losing consciousness several times without receiving medical treatment. 🔹“This is the last time you will see me,” he told his lawyer. “They brought me here to kill me. I don’t see myself surviving. This is the end.” 🔹PHRI notes the escalation in torture began directly after Abu Safiya challenged his detention in court. I was walking alone in the streets of Gaza City a short while ago, late at night. I did not expect this brief walk to become one of the most difficult moments I have experienced since the beginning of the war. The city is completely engulfed in darkness. There are no streetlights, no lit homes, and no signs of normal life. Among the tents spread everywhere, rats were moving in large numbers, as if they had become part of the daily scene people have grown used to seeing. I saw people lying on the sidewalks and sleeping on the roads because they had nowhere else to go. I saw a man searching through garbage bags in the dark of night for something to ease his hunger or meet his family’s needs. Along the roadside, dozens of people sat outside, escaping the suffocating heat inside the tents, which have turned into ovens with the arrival of summer. I also heard the sound of a severe, continuous cough coming from inside a tent an elderly woman coughing in a way that reflected deep exhaustion, as if her body could no longer endure, with no medicine or ability to help in that moment. In the midst of this darkness, I heard babies crying because there was no milk available, and a young girl screaming from inside a tent, crying to her mother because insects had bitten her feet again for the second or third time that night. I returned wishing I had not gone out that night. I realized more than ever that this city no longer resembles the life we once knew. What is happening here cannot be understood through images or numbers alone. Anyone who wants to see the true scale of the suffering must see Gaza after sunset, when everything disappears except pain.

A real catastrophe is unfolding before our eyes in Gaza City, yet it feels as though no one cares. The world seems unaware of what is happening here, or perhaps it has simply stopped paying attention. Today, I walked a long distance to the only drinking water station serving our area. When I arrived, I was shocked to find that it had completely stopped operating. The reason was not a technical failure, but the lack of fuel and engine oil needed to keep the desalination plant running. Imagine a facility that provided clean water to more than 20,000 people living in displacement camps suddenly shutting down. This is happening as summer begins and the heat grows more intense with each passing day. Thousands of families are now left without access to safe drinking water. And the tragedy does not end there. Dozens of bakeries have also stopped operating or drastically reduced production because they can no longer obtain the fuel and lubricants needed to run their equipment. Every day I stand in long lines under the scorching sun for two or three hours, and many times I return to my tent empty-handed, unable to find a single loaf of bread for my family. The situation here is becoming more desperate with every passing day. No aid, no water, no bread, no homes, and increasingly it feels as though our lives have no value in the eyes of the world. What we are experiencing is no longer just a humanitarian crisisit is a disaster that is worsening by the hour. Sometimes I feel as though I am writing these words into a void, as if our voices can no longer reach anyone. But the reality is that the situation here has spiraled completely out of control, and people are being left alone to face hunger, thirst, and unbearable heat. Is anyone listening to us? Does anyone truly understand the scale of this catastrophe before it is too late?
