Joining us now-- Susan Vita, James Wintle, and Nicholas Brown of the @LibraryCongress' Music Division discuss the Library's music collection and music's role in American history and culture - from the country's founding to today. Call in to join the conversation! Watch live here: bit.ly/43iFb7z
@cspanwj @librarycongress Before "Preservation Hall" grew from an artists' frame-shop to a gathering place for local jazz musicians, there was "free-style" music, from the 1830's at the "Congo Square" drum circles with hand-made instruments, and in Tremé where brass bands were born:youtube.com/watch?v=Me1IxD…
@cspanwj @librarycongress Hi thx, does Country music intersect with Jazz in its history? For instance, the late-great Albert Francis "Pud" Brown is credited with the arrangement of "You Are My Sunshine!" that singer, La. Gov. Jimmy Davis, bought from the Rice Brothers for a few dollars (Shreveport Times).
@cspanwj @librarycongress Here's another Alan Lomax gem, a "prison work song" first sung by Huddie William Ledbetter (1888 - 1949); performed @ The Spotted Cat Music Club on New Orleans' Frenchmen Street. The foot stomping represents the sound of prison chain-gang hammers at work.youtube.com/watch?v=iEfJRo…

@cspanwj @librarycongress So refreshing to hear this today. I got invited to tour the library of Congress but didn’t get around to it! We pulled that invitation out and are going to follow up on it today.
@cspanwj @librarycongress One day my father was complaining about the music of my time. His complaint was the words didn't make sense. I looked at him and said merrsy dotes and dotesy dotes and little lambsy divey. It did not go over well with him.
@cspanwj @librarycongress Look at guests and host. Don't they just scream "American music"?
@cspanwj @librarycongress This segment belongs on CSPAN History programming. WJ is supposed to be on subjects of our Government. WJ is avoiding discussing the dozens of crimes committed by Trump and his cohorts. Nothing on the sentencing of Proud Boys Enrique Tarrio today for his planning of 1/6.
@cspanwj @librarycongress I’m of the opinion that WJ seems to get majority of right wing extremist guests so instead of counteracting the propaganda they fill in with nonsensical segments like this rather than putting it on their history programs.
@cspanwj @librarycongress Is this history channel segment going to be on for a hour and a half. All distraction. WJ is a joke.
