I'm convinced the big innovation in transformers over rnns is the ability to quickly train on sequence data. No better internal representations, the variational constraints guiding some parametric data regeneration are supplementary and not substantially different.

Apple is cutting Vision Pro production as it fails to meet sales targets. Analysts expected it to sell 700-800k units in 2024, but it could now be as low as 400k. A lower cost model could now be pushed beyond 2025, if it ever arrives. theverge.com/2024/4/23/2413…
I guess I’ll ask it: Can you address long-standing inequalities in journalistic coverage of underserved communities by receiving the equivalent of a temp who makes $50k a year with no benefits?

Not sure how this fits into today's city dog discourse but there are two next to me at this brewery tonight (NYC). Both were real getting real wriggly. One owner picked theirs up, turned it around, and presented it's butt for the other to sniff. Calmed the situation immediately.
Happy 4/20 to all. Today is a great day to check out @JustFixOrg's user-friendly online tool for researching NYC property owners: whoownswhat.justfix.org/en/

Great post from @molly0xFFF about AI. Kinda works, but costs way too much: resource costs, scale of required hardware, data needed for training. All for something so mid citationneeded.news/ai-isnt-useles…

The sandwich shop nearby has given me the wrong order twice this week and I know I'm going back for a third try. I think I'm starting to understand gambling addictions

Usually you can just... see the dirt that's left? Why turn another chore into a bad version of powerwashing simulator?

I've been hosting bar trivia recently. I like to give something to the 4th and 5th place teams that just miss out on the cash prizes. Last night they got a paperback copy of Jane Austen's Emma and Alvin and the Chipmunks 2: The Squeakquel on DVD
LLMs need exponential increases in training data volume to get linear performance gains on narrow tasks. If a good way to build general-purpose AI exists, statistical learning isn't it.

UW, the first academic employee union in the US (I think) is with UAW. We made some major gains in the most recent bargaining session: 3 years of 3% stipend raises. If you're a grad student, researcher, or postdoc, unionize! If you already have one, work with them!
