This is Cortical Labs' CL1. 200,000 living human neurons on a multi-electrode array, derived from adult donor stem cells. The Doom demo is the headline, but the number worth paying attention to is the power draw: a full rack of 30 CL1 units runs on 850 to 1,000 watts. For context, running equivalent AI workloads on GPU infrastructure requires tens of kilowatts. The human brain runs 86 billion neurons on 20 watts. Silicon has spent 70 years trying to replicate that efficiency and is currently moving in the opposite direction, with AI data centers now projected to consume 9% of US electricity by 2030. The CL1 ships at $35,000 per unit, with cloud access at $300 per week. Investors include In-Q-Tel, the CIA's venture arm. The Doom demo took an independent developer one week to build using a Python API. The original DishBrain Pong experiment took 18 months. That compression from 18 months to 7 days is the real story. Not the gameplay. The interface problem between digital systems and biological tissue is being solved, and the implications extend well beyond gaming into drug discovery, adaptive robotics, and low-power autonomous systems.
