Breaking News: Russian President Vladimir Putin to Build First Russian Embassy in Aba, Abia State, Nigeria The Russian Federation has announced plans to acquire more than six plots of land at Brass Junction in Aba, Abia State, for the construction of its first Russian Embassy in southeastern Nigeria. In a statement attributed to the Russian government, the decision was made in recognition of the growing number of Igbo entrepreneurs and investors who travel to Russia for business, trade, education, and investment opportunities. According to the statement, bringing a Russian diplomatic mission closer to the region will make visa processing, consular services, and business cooperation more accessible while strengthening economic and diplomatic ties between Russia and the people of southeastern Nigeria.

The Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday ordered the deregistration of African Democratic Congress (ADC) and four others over failure to meet the constitutional requirements for political parties in the country. Justice Peter Lifu, in a judgement, ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to deregistered the affected parties having failed to secure 25 per cent of the votes in the last general elections in compliance with the provisions of the law. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the five political parties include ADC, Accord (A), Action Alliance (AA), Action Peoples Party (APP) and Zenith Labour Party (ZLP).

They did not unite Nigeria. They manufactured it. In 1914, Frederick Lugard — a British colonial administrator — signed a document that merged the Northern and Southern Protectorates of Nigeria into a single territory. He did not consult the Hausa. He did not ask the Yoruba. He did not negotiate with the Igbo. He drew a line, named a country, and handed the bill to millions of people who had never agreed to share a nation. The map above is not a celebration. It is evidence. Look at it carefully. Hausa and Fulani dominating the north. Yoruba anchoring the west. Ibo, Bini, Ijaw, Efik compressed into the south and east. These were not simply "tribes." They were civilizations — with distinct legal systems, spiritual traditions, trade networks, and political philosophies developed over centuries. The Oyo Empire had a constitutional monarchy before most European nations formalized theirs. The Kanem-Bornu Empire had been a diplomatic and scholarly power since the 9th century. The Igbo operated through decentralized republican governance long before Western democracy claimed the concept. None of that mattered to London. What mattered was efficiency. Administering two protectorates separately was expensive. Merging them cut costs. The amalgamation of 1914 was not an act of nation-building. It was a corporate restructuring. Nigeria was not born. It was incorporated. And the contradictions that decision created have never been resolved. The north and south entered the union with fundamentally different relationships to Islam, Christianity, land rights, education systems, and governance traditions. British indirect rule preserved and empowered northern emirate structures while simultaneously undermining southern ones. When independence came in 1960, Nigerians inherited not just a country but a set of unresolved tensions that had been deliberately engineered and then abandoned. The Biafran War. The endless cycle of military coups. The resource conflicts in the Niger Delta. The insurgency in the northeast. These are not signs of African failure. They are the predictable consequences of colonial architecture — borders drawn not to reflect people, but to contain and extract them. What is most remarkable is not that Nigeria struggles. It is that 200 million people continue to build meaning, culture, music, literature, and identity inside a container they never designed for themselves. That is not weakness. That is an act of daily resistance most of the world does not have the vocabulary to name. The question worth sitting with is this: if the amalgamation of 1914 was an administrative decision made for British economic convenience, at what point does Nigeria get to decide — on its own terms — what it actually wants to be? I have said it before. You can be very smart, but you cannot be just too smart to be able to outsmart and fool everyone at the same time. When the National Assembly amended the Electoral Act and inserted Section 77 of the Act, they did so with the intention that the Act would help them checkmate overly ambitious politicians from defecting to other political parties to chase their ambitions, even when injustice had been meted out to them by unnecessarily manipulating them out of the primary election of their political party. Immediately the Act was passed, INEC, as usual, did not disappoint. INEC quickly backed the National Assembly by issuing guidelines which stated that every political party must first give INEC a 21-day notice before conducting its primaries. But it did not stop there. Political parties were further mandated to submit a digital register of their members before they could conduct any primary election. Failure to do so within the stipulated time, which INEC fixed as 10th of May, or the omission of any party member from the submitted register, would automatically render the primary election of that party null and void. At that point, INEC and the National Assembly believed they had perfected everything. They thought they had successfully cornered and estopped aggrieved politicians, especially those affected by the recent APC primary elections, from defecting to another political party. But unknown to them, a political party known as "Youth Party" had quietly dragged INEC before Justice Umar of the Federal High Court in Abuja. Their argument was simple but explosive. They argued that although the Electoral Act gave INEC the power to receive notifications from political parties before conducting conventions and primary elections, that power, however, was only meant to enable INEC monitor the activities of political parties and nothing more. The Youth Party further argued that upon a detailed consideration of Sections 29, 31, 32, 82, 84(1) and 98 of the Electoral Act, INEC had no power whatsoever to go outside the provisions of the law and begin issuing guidelines that dictate when politicians can defect into another political party, when parties can conduct their primaries, when they must submit the names of their members, or even when campaigns must stop. According to them, those sections of the Electoral Act had already clearly stipulated the timelines for submission of candidates’ names and the period for political campaigns. Therefore, INEC could not arrogate to itself powers beyond what the law expressly provided by issuing guidelines that practically controlled and strangled political parties. They then asked Justice Umar to declare all the guidelines earlier issued by INEC null and void for being undemocratic and completely against the spirit and intention of the Electoral Act. Justice Umar did not even waste time before aligning himself with the arguments of the Youth Party. In a judgment that has now sent shockwaves across the political space, he struck down all the guidelines issued by INEC and declared them null and void. Now, the implications of that judgment are massive. First, the transfer window across political parties has effectively reopened for politicians who may wish to dump their parties and move elsewhere. Secondly, no political party is under any immediate pressure or compulsion to submit the names or particulars of its candidates to INEC until 120 days before the election. Thirdly, political parties can still substitute the names of their candidates before 90 days to the election, and INEC will be legally bound to accept such substitutions. As it stands today, every wise politician who has been disqualified is expected to immediately take advantage of this judgment while INEC is yet to appeal it.
