I watched an editor on TT talk about themes for MG, YA, and adult and she articulted it so well I wanna share: MG is about discovering the world is bigger than they. YA: is about them deciding who to be in that wider world. Adult is about dealing with the consequences of that
Choice. YA and Adult can be spicy or not spicy. All three can deal with dark themes. It's about the way it's written and where the character is in this journey. (Like a teen could be an MC in an adult if they're dealing with consequences of their choices)
@ciarasmithwrite Thank you so much for this 🖤 My current WIP has an older teen as the MC, but I haven’t felt right calling it a YA due to the darker themes and it dealing with consequences, but wasn’t sure due to their age. This makes me feel so much more confident saying it’s Adult.
@ciarasmithwrite Ooh... I like this explanation
@ciarasmithwrite @OneLiteraryFox Phew. Makes me feel a lot better about calling my book with an 18 year old MC "adult." Yes, she's a teenager, but she's one who knows what she wants to be in that world, and unfortunately that has huge consequences.
@ciarasmithwrite This is amazing. Beautifully concise✨
@ciarasmithwrite I was just talking about this post to my wife (she can’t figure out if her current WIP is YA or A) So glad it’s back on my feed 😩
@ciarasmithwrite I kinda love this. I’ve been trying to explain how my books aren’t YA for a long time, but because they’re not spicy, people refuse to call it adult. This helps so much. Thank you!!
