This painting shows the most heartbreaking reunion in all of literature. To understand it, you have to know who the dog is... His name is Argos, and he belongs to Ulysses, the Greek hero also known as Odysseus. Before Ulysses sailed away to fight in the Trojan War, he had raised Argos from a puppy, a fast and beautiful hunting dog. Then the war called, and Ulysses left. He would not come home for twenty years. When Ulysses finally set foot on his own island again, he came in disguise, dressed as a beggar, so that no one would know him. His house was full of men trying to steal his wife and his kingdom. To survive, he had to remain a stranger in his own home. No one recognized him. Not his loyal servants. Not the people who had known him all his life. But lying in the dirt by the gate, old and forgotten, covered in ticks, too weak to stand, was a dog. Argos had waited twenty years. And the moment he saw him, he knew. He was the only one. Nearly blind, half dead, he lifted his head and pricked up his ears, and he wagged his tail for the master he had never stopped waiting for. Ulysses saw him. And because he was in disguise, surrounded by enemies, he could not run to him, could not kneel down, could not say his name. He could only look at his old friend and, turning his face away so no one would see, let a single tear fall. And then, in Homer's own words, "the dark shadow of death closed down on Argos' eyes, the instant he had seen Odysseus, twenty years away." He had held on to life for one reason only: he was waiting to see him come home. And the moment he did, he could finally let go... It is such a beautiful painting, and the look on that dog's face is so universal, so instantly understood by anyone who has ever loved and waited, that it is enough to bring a grown man to tears.

Britain wrote everything down, so we opened the books. 📖 Turns out fewer than 1 man in 10 could vote in the year Britain banned the slave trade. No woman could. Your ancestors could hang for stealing a sheep, get shipped across the world for petty theft, or go down a mine at 8 years old. In Manchester, the average age of death in a labouring family was 17. They weren't running the slave trade. They were underneath it too. Which is what makes what happened next worth knowing. In 1772 an enslaved man named James Somerset walked free from an English court, because English law couldn't hold a slave. In 1791, 300,000 families just stopped buying slave sugar. No march, no riot, just a decision made at 300,000 kitchen tables. In 1792, 519 petitions carrying 390,000 names hit Parliament, most signed by people who couldn't vote themselves. In 1807, Britain banned the trade. Then the slave owners sent Britain a bill for the 800,000 people they still held. 💷 £20 million. About 40% of the entire government budget at the time. The Treasury says it wasn't paid off until 2015. So if your family paid British tax before then, they helped buy 800,000 people their freedom. From 1808 the Royal Navy spent 60 years hunting slave ships at sea: 1,600 stopped, 150,000 people freed, and 1,600 British sailors dead, mostly of disease, buried thousands of miles from home. ⚓ In 1816 they ended two centuries of Barbary corsairs enslaving Europeans. In 1896 a war that lasted 38 minutes ended slavery in Zanzibar. 🇹🇿 Almost every country on Earth outlaws slavery today. That fight was paid for largely at British expense, by British hands.🇬🇧 So why haven't you heard any of this? Because within living memory, someone rewrote the story. You got taught the crime. Not the cure. The powerful exploited the world. They exploited their own people first. Bridget Phillipson Says White Working Class Children Are An Under-Discussed Area. She Is The Education Secretary. In 2025 just 36 percent of white British pupils on free school meals passed their English and maths GCSEs. Not excelled. Passed. The bare minimum. Nearly two thirds of the poorest white British children left school last year unable to demonstrate basic literacy and numeracy. There are 1.25 million of them. An independent inquiry backed by Bridget Phillipson has now concluded that the education system is not set up to serve them. Phillipson described this as an under-discussed area. She has been Secretary of State for Education for two years. The inquiry's finding is not a surprise. It is a confession. The education system has not failed white working class children by accident. It has failed them by design, the design of a framework that has shaped curriculum development, teacher training, school culture and institutional priorities for two decades, and in which white working class children do not appear as a named priority group anywhere. The framework is documented. The 2030 United Nations Agenda commits member states to inclusive and equitable quality education and to reduced inequalities. In the British institutional context inclusive education has meant ethnic minority communities, LGBTQ inclusion, refugee integration and cultural diversity. The Teal Book, the Cabinet Office diversity and inclusion strategy, frames British institutions around protected characteristics under the Equality Act. White British is not a protected characteristic. Working class is not a protected characteristic. The curriculum initiatives, school diversity programmes and teacher training frameworks built around that legal structure were not built for these children. They fall outside the framework entirely. That is not an oversight. It is the logical consequence of building an education system around a set of priorities that does not include them. Majority populations do not need protecting. They need managing. The results are visible in every classroom. Schools have spent two decades embedding diversity frameworks, unconscious bias training, inclusive curriculum reviews and cultural sensitivity programmes. The attainment gap for white working class boys has widened throughout. The knowledge-rich curriculum that Katharine Birbalsingh proved works at Michaela has been treated with suspicion rather than imitation. The EBacc is under pressure. Vocational alternatives have been underfunded. And the children sitting at the bottom of every attainment table, year after year, are the ones the framework was never designed to lift. Phillipson has called it an under-discussed area and backed an inquiry that recommends a massive expansion of apprenticeships and free public transport for under-21s. Both may be worth doing. Neither addresses the foundational question the inquiry does not ask: why has an education system presided over by successive governments, consuming hundreds of billions in public funding, spent two decades prioritising every group except the one now sitting at the bottom of every measure? Phillipson's inquiry has now told her that managing them has produced a generation of children who cannot read and cannot count. She has been Education Secretary for two years. Shadow Education Secretary before that. If this is under-discussed, she is among those who chose not to discuss it.
