Under Trump’s latest tariffs, British exports face higher effective tariffs than equivalent EU goods bc the UK’s 10% tariff is added on top of existing WTO rates, while the EU’s 10% is an all-in rate on many products. That’s the Brexit reality of negotiating alone. The EU bargains as a market of 450 million consumers. Britain bargains as a market of 68 million.

🚨 I’ve stumbled upon a quote often misattributed to a Tatler article, which actually originated in a 2017 Telegraph 'lifestyle' article: “Cottrell’s often reckless temperament may help to explain the unusually close bond between him and Farage. Did he view Nigel as a father figure? 'Yes,' replied Cottrell. 'In many things. I mean, I still do.'” Convicted fraudster “Posh George” Cottrell, who Farage described as “like a son to me” in 2024, when Cottrell, despite holding no official Reform role, was often at Farage’s side. The launch of Cottrell’s book, 'How to Launder Money', was on 12 February 2026 at the Raffles hotel in Whitehall, attended by Farage, Richard Tice, Matt Goodwin, Nick Candy, James Orr, Martin Daubney, and Laila Cunningham. In 2016, Posh George was arrested by IRS [the US Internal Revenue Service] officers at the Republican national convention, where he had flown with a group of leading British Brextremists including now former MP Farage, then the leader of UKIP, when he was arrested while disembarking from a plane at Chicago’s O’Hare airport. According to the Telegraph article, he: “was confronted by eight armed federal Inland Revenue Service (IRS) agents as he got off a plane in Chicago, with Nigel Farage just behind him.” Cottrell was originally federally indicted on 21 counts, covering conspiracy to commit money laundering, wire fraud, blackmail, extortion, and mail fraud among the charges. A judge denied him bail, calling him a “serious flight risk”. Prosecutors advised the judge in the case to offer Cottrell a light prison sentence because he had been willing to “provide federal agents additional information after his arrest” as part of a plea deal. Under the subsequent plea agreement, the 21 counts were reduced to a single count of wire fraud, to which he pleaded guilty, being sentenced in March 2017, having already served eight months since his July 2016 arrest. Oh, and btw, Tatler’s October 2024 UK print issue printed a story with the cover line: “George Cottrell - He lives like a playboy, gambles like a Bond villain and has served time in a US prison for wire fraud. But despite this, and his powerful position as Nigel Farage's favourite fixer, George Cottrell insists he prefers life out of the limelight. Really?” Perhaps even more interesting is the final paragraph of the Telegraph piece (linked below): “A year after the referendum poll, Cottrell attended a lavish anniversary party held at a mansion owned by Arron Banks outside Bristol. ‘The party was fantastic and despite my unfortunate adventure, and everything I went through, I still maintain 2016 was the best year of my life,’ he says. ‘Brexit and Trump. Nothing better’.”
