As a parents with teenagers, being the bad guy by limiting their social media has been a path to exhaustion and constant bickering (at least in my home). So having the gvt back me up and do the obvious and sensible thing will give me, as a parent, more reinforcement when not giving my kids social media until 16. Frankly, I’m going to try and limit it until they are 18. The ability to point to the gvt backing me up, ideally rooted in research and mental health gives me a shot at framing the long term effects of social media like other impactful products/technologies - there’s positives and negatives so take your time. Gvt action isn’t the solution to everything, or most things for that matter, but limiting social media is definitely an obvious one and will result in healthier kids. theverge.com/2024/3/25/2408…
@chamath So porn consumption is fine, but tiktok is where the lines are drawn? How much did they pay you chamath to build this narrative
@chamath The irony in this post - I almost fell off my 🚽- as a parent who had teenagers 10 years ago, I hated how Facebook was selling digital cigarettes. Well, better late than never
@chamath Government should just raise our kids! Going to leave this here but just wait for the next All-In. This new Florida Law won’t be on the docket. And if you think about, it will be clear as to why (along with the point of this tweet).
@chamath Yes. Parents need all the help we can get. I have a 9yo and I'm already seeing the peer pressuring for him to get a phone for text messages. We barely let him play multi player video games once or twice/week and a iPad for shows for just 2 hours per week. And that is a struggle
@chamath Slippery slopes are much more difficult to see in govt than at home … Strong families and stable homes not rigid govt and controlling regulations
@chamath Im also a parent… and I get it dude. Sometimes it nice to lean on the law when keeping your kids safely in-bounds.
