This young man has taken advantage of that provision, which gives individuals, businesses, estates, factories, and communities the ability to generate up to 1 megawatt (1MW) of electricity without obtaining a license from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC). As a stakeholder in the sector, this could be another opportunity for the government to reduce its over-dependency on the national grid. If Biafra was a Yoruba experience, it would have become a firm political tool of negotiation at the national level. And, at the international level, it would have commanded respect. In governance, it is said, never let a good crisis go to waste. Political tacticians always believe something advantageous can come out from a political misfortune. Thus, once political crisis that is expected to sink a politician or a political bloc happens, political strategists advice you study how you can reverse it to your advantage. Biafra was a political misfortune that befell Ndi Igbo. However, lack of political foresight or negligence on the path of Igbo political leaders have made the Biafran experience to gradually become a political baggage and liability. The Yorubas took ample advantage of the June 12 debacle. Resultantly, they have gotten a Presidency out of it. They have also gotten a national holiday out of what they considered a grave injustice meted to their son, MKO Abiola and to them. Now, how did they go about it? 1. During the Sani Abacha's military junta, a regime that inherited the Ibrahim Babangida's administration that scuttled the June 12 mandate, the Yorubas ensured their top brass were not part of the regime. 2. They put up a strong media campaign against the Abacha government. 3. They enlisted many activists from other ethnic nationalities into NADECO. The fight was framed as a fight against injustice and tyranny. Thus, immediately Nigeria returned to democracy, Nigerian elites agreed it's just and expedient for the next president to come from the South West. 4. The Yorubas did not make the mistake of taking up arms against the Nigerian state. Rather, they employed political means and inter-ethnic collaboration in resolving what they believed was due to them. Today, more than thirty years after the June 12 1993 experience, the Yorubas have produced two Presidents of Nigeria and one Vice President. They have also succeeded in making June 12 a national holiday in Nigeria. This, I believe, is the biggest win out of what the Yorubas considered to be an injustice towards them by the Nigerian state. In terms of injustice, the June 12 1993 experience was a far cry compared to the injustice Ndi Igbo experienced from the Nigerian state in the all important task of keeping Nigeria one. There is no doubt Ndi Igbo have paid the heaviest price in the task of keeping Nigeria one. However, how has our people, Ndi Igbo, gone about in addressing this injustice? 1. Indiscriminate screaming and cussing. Throwing pity party. Wearing the rags of victimhood. 2. Seeing other blocs in Nigeria as enemies. Instead of enlisting and collaborating with them. MASSOB, IPOB and other similar groups have been unable to make the membership of their group attractive to ethnicities outside Igbo. 3. Igbo activists prefer to use lies and propaganda, instead of consistently sticking to few verifiable facts when pointing out the injustice against Ndi Igbo. For example, the imbalance in state creation. 4. Taking up arms against the Nigerian state and justifying this self-destructive method. It is not late in the day for Biafra to be a good negotiation tool for Ndi Igbo in Nigeria. But, if we continue to go about it in a vengeful way, as well as insisting on the break up of Nigeria, then Biafra as an experience will eventually lose all its empathy, even among we the Igbos. Conclusively, we Ndi Igbo must come to terms with the fact that Biafra is dead. However, we can strategically evoke it's memory to improve our lot as Ndi Igbo in our political evolution in Nigeria.
