If you've flown a regional flight in the US recently, there's a 50% chance you were sitting in a Brazilian-made airplane. You probably didn't know that. Embraer E-Jets make up about half of all regional jets flying for American Airlines, Delta, United, and Alaska. Almost one in two US regional flights operates on a plane built in São José dos Campos, Brazil. American Airlines just ordered 90 more. Envoy Air (American's regional subsidiary) committed to 214 Embraer jets total. Piedmont Airlines is adding 45 E175s starting in 2028. Finnair just ordered up to 46 E195-E2s for its European fleet. Embraer is the third-largest aircraft manufacturer on earth. Behind only Airbus and Boeing. Record revenue of $7.6 billion in 2025. Guidance of $8.2-8.5 billion for 2026. Order backlog of $31.6 billion (an all-time high, up 20% year-over-year). 244 aircraft delivered in 2025. Q1 2026 deliveries up 47% year-over-year. The company started in 1969 as a Brazilian government project to build military aircraft. Today it builds commercial jets, executive jets, military transport aircraft (the KC-390 Millennium), and the A-29 Super Tucano (a light attack aircraft used by air forces on four continents). It trades on both the B3 in São Paulo and the New York Stock Exchange. Market cap: approximately $12 billion. For context, that is less than the market cap of Textron ($15B), which makes Cessnas. Embraer builds aircraft that carry more passengers, fly longer routes, serve more airlines, and compete with Airbus and Boeing for global contracts. It is valued at less than a company that makes propeller planes. Eu nunca tinha me entendido como brasileiro até morar fora. Foi só ali que algumas comparações surgiram ,não no sentido de "quem é melhor",mas de perceber: ok, nisso a gente é diferente… e nisso também. E é aí que começa o erro mais comum. É profundamente equivocado achar que "o que deu certo lá fora" automaticamente dará certo aqui. Cultura é orgânica, ela nasce de história, trauma, clima, miscigenação, escassez, improviso, fé, humor e contradição. Eu não gostaria que o Brasil virasse Estados Unidos, nem Japão, muito menos a Europa. Não por desprezo, mas porque vejo algo singular aqui. Somos mais "humanos". O Brasil é quase um paradoxo antropológico. De longe, é difícil entender como pessoas tão diferentes conseguem coexistir num mesmo território. E quando falo de "humano", não é esse clichê de calor humano. É algo mais fundo como, compaixão difusa, brilho nos olhos, uma espécie de pureza meio infantil, não no sentido bobo, mas no sentido de inocência existencial. Somos como crianças no mundo. Com problemas sérios, estruturais reais mas sem plena consciência deles. E, talvez, sem total desejo de ter. Aqui acontecem coisas que só acontecem no Brasil. Como bem foi dito no vídeo: só o Brasil consegue fabricar o rei da pisadinha e outras figuraças kkkkk. E não é piada é diagnóstico cultural, isso é o orgânico falando mais alto que o importado. A política sabota muito o ambiente, e nós, equivocadamente, passamos a julgar a cultura. Não há nada de errado com a nossa cultura. O erro está em tentar "corrigi-la" por imitação. Melhorar, sim. Mas de dentro pra fora. Com base no nosso próprio histórico. O que te torna brasileiro? Aquilo que só existe aqui. Se você suspender o olhar comercial, esquecer a importação simbólica, largar a obsessão por modelos externos, começa a aparecer o Brasil real, não o exportável, não o vendável, mas o vivo. Volta a observar o homem da roça, o improviso urbano, o riso no caos, a fé torta, o bom humor e a criatividade sem manual. O Brasil não precisa virar outra coisa. Precisa se compreender. A cultura não se copia, se cultiva.

When we look at the Brazilian economy and wonder why growth has been so low for so long, an uncomfortable part of the answer lies in the private sect itself. Brazil is a notorious breeding ground for zombie companies. These are firms that cannot generate enough profit even to pay the interest on their own debt, but remain in existence because the financial system allows for the constant rollover of this liability. They do not innovate, they do not grow, they do not increase productivity. According to an article by Granzotto et al. (2025) in the Brazilian Review of Finance, which compares companies in various emerging markets, on average 7.6% of firms are "static zombies" (firms with EBITDA/Financial Expenses < 1) and 5.5% are "dynamic zombies" (EBITDA/Financial Expenses >/= 1) in these markets. In the Brazilian case, 16.75% of companies are classified as static zombies and 13.94% as dynamic zombies! In other words, more than double the average for emerging markets. The authors themselves bluntly state that Brazil is the "heart of the zombie economy" among emerging markets, about 2.3 times above the international standard. To clarify what this means: we are talking about companies that cannot generate enough profit to cover their financial costs, meaning that investors will have to wait longer to recover their principal, and that workers will be employed in firms without the capacity to invest in new technologies and processes that could improve their human capital and productivity. The article shows that this mass of zombie companies distorts capital allocation, reduces aggregate productivity, and weakens investment dynamics. Credit, labor, and resources are trapped in financially fragile firms, while more productive companies face a hostile financing environment. And this, of course, has a cost in terms of potential economic growth. As long as the Brazilian government does not address the problem of reforming the business environment and its capital markets, these types of inefficiencies will continue to persist and condemn workers and investors to remain trapped in firms that should be defunct.
