Blood quantum as definitive of Native American identity is gross to me. My grandchildren shouldn’t have to reproduce with a Pawnee, Ponca or Kiowa just to purify the “blood” of my descendants. We are not animals defined by breeding practices like show dogs. Our culture is bigger
@brettachapman @marrs_edward In ancient times the nations never intermarried???
Sadly, to the government, we are all breeding stock. Yours to purify your descendants. For the rest of us to provide workers for the capitalist war machine. Politicians have started legislating mandatory reproduction through anti-abortion laws, with support from people who think it's motivated by religion. My soul weeps for all involved.
@brettachapman True but that’s how they set in the five civilized tribe men didn’t register a whole groups. A populations were left out.
@brettachapman It is an exclusive club which you are not required to be a member of. You can be native and not be enrolled
@brettachapman Like my brother once said there are only 3 groups that have to be registered to prove lineage - dogs, horses and Native Americans. No other group has to be registered to prove their lineage.
@brettachapman This is not a standard set by BIA. Tribal enrollment standards are set by the tribe as part of their sovereign governments. Many tribes also discount blood quantum and use lineage from census rolls such as the Dawes. Tribal members can petition their councils to change it.
@brettachapman My uncle married a Native woman, my cousins are Native. According to my aunt, the culture defines my cousins, not their blood.
@brettachapman The requirement of blood quanta is a colonization technique. Precisely because it's imposed on only one segment of the population.
@brettachapman The Muscogee/Creek cut off is 1/4. Seems ridiculous to me. The Black freeman have no such rules so why should Natives?
