Blood quantum is perhaps the most European idea in history and is certainly not how Native Americans ever looked at identity, yet many Native people today are obsessed with this creepy idea of blood purity—it is no less racist than when the racist Whites say it about themselves
@brettachapman I am Native and proud. I tell people, I was gifted to look like you, so I can blend in.
@brettachapman I can’t believe my Indian brothers and sisters fall for that racist crap.
@brettachapman If we did not have blood quantum, we would have been diluted out of existence and would have blonde hair and blue eyes like some tribes.
@brettachapman I think a lot Native People buy into blood quantum because they grew up with it. Higher blood quantum Natives get treated differently than low. Prejudice, discrimination breeds identifying with skin color. Low has a choice to be or not to be. Tribal benefits are huge incentives.
@brettachapman On point. It also can be interpreted as owning exclusive rights in claiming victimhood, incongruous in Native culture.
@brettachapman Blood quantum was started for livestock and a way to deplete future indigenous ancestry.
@brettachapman Then why were half breeds kicked out of the tribes in the 1800's. You are making up history as you go. It was so bad that the government gave separate land grants to the mixed race offspring as the tribes kicked them out of their Sovereign lands.
@brettachapman I was surprised when I went to North Carolina and found out the eastern Cherokees are into that
@brettachapman If you get rid of blood quantum than anyone can claim to be Native American. Is there a better idea to protect ancestral rights. I realize most tribes already lost their treaty rights when they elect tribal leaders addicted to federal funding but is there a better idea.
