Wallet Drained, A Port-Mortem... Earlier today I fell victim to a wallet drainer on one of my personal hot wallets, losing 1.47 BTC plus around ~4 BTC worth of ordinals ($300k+ USD) In the ten years I've spent in crypto, this is the first time I've lost a sizable amount money through a hack/scam (let alone wallet drainer) I'm not one to take op-sec lightly. I have all personal logins authenticated with yubikeys, and majority of my crypto assets/ordinals secure on hardware + multi-sig wallets. The wallet affected was intended for minting only, but over time I started to get careless by leaving more ordinals on there as well as funds for purchasing/trading. How It Happened This morning I got an @ _all ping on the Bitcoin Rock discord, it was a giveaway for Runestones. The link brought you to a carbon-copy ME launchpad and I foolishly connected my wallet without thinking twice. It wasn't long after signing that I realized something was wrong. My first thought was how did the attacker manage to ping the entire server without admin privileges? Well turns out there is a new way to manipulate discord pings using something called 'markdown flow'. Which means even reputable servers like Bitcoin Rocks can be affected by these type of scams. Conclusion All in all, this way an extremely painful lesson. Truly nothing worse than the moment you realize your wallet has been drained. It goes without saying but be vigilant when it comes to connecting your wallets on giveaways/mints. I got too complacent thinking this would never happen to me. Scammers/hackers will continue to come up with more and more inventive ways of stealing peoples funds. Lastly I want to thank those who reached out and gave their support. I only told a few people but somehow @papozorus of @btcordinal caught wind and reached out to me. He was even kind enough to purchase the 2x BTC Machines that were stolen and send them back to me 🙏 I did not expect this type of kindness, and it just goes to show the caliber of people in this space. This is something I rarely encounter in the crypto market, the ordinal community is really something else. Also, no funds/accounts/logins related to @ordinalrugs were affected. This was just my own personal wallet and I only have myself to blame here. Needless to say, I will not allow this to happen again. Stay safe out there~
Also yes, the scammer did use a Bitcoin Puppet as a tx fee 😱
@bitarchon I'm so sorry for you brother. I felt awful when I witnessed that. I was wondering why this sick Machine was on the floor and then I checked ME history... I bought it, let me know if you want it back.
@bitarchon Wow man, so sorry to hear. I also fell victim late last year on my eth wallet, but much less in value lost. Nice to see those acts of kindness, and I hope you can rebuild from here. See you next week maybe ...
@bitarchon Dude I hit a drainer on a eth wallet and it made me grind harder. You can turn this around! Don't give up
@bitarchon On behalf of le puppettes sorry man. Happened to me once on eth.
@bitarchon 500k in one hot wallet thats absolutely mind blowing I have 6 figures across about a dozen cold and hot wallets with no wallet holding more than 10% of my net worth so if i get drained i can recover quickly as its just 10%
@bitarchon Worst possible person this could have happened to. Huge bummer man & feel your pain. You’ll come back 10x stronger.
@bitarchon So bummed to hear this Archon hang in there
