I really enjoyed this sober look at the ways @molly0xFFF found generative AI could be useful—for proofreading, as a more dynamic dictionary, and for coding assistance—if it didn't prop up and validate a reckless, extractive, and profit-hungry industry: citationneeded.news/ai-isnt-useles…
@bcmerchant @molly0xFFF A publishing industry that still charges $10-$50 for a digital copy of a Public Domain book, or books published before 1950, is a perfect example of "extractive" and "profit-hungry."
@bcmerchant @molly0xFFF These essays are replete with reductionist reasoning it's unclear what the main argument is. Disallowing any value greater than the sum then arguing that anyone who finds value greater than the sum is being exploited. A "reality check" with who's version of reality?
@bcmerchant @molly0xFFF I wouldn't say she's propping it up. The problem w/generative or supposed 'general' intelligence AI is that it's wildly oversold/fake. Gen AI doesn't generate much, except tons of garbage. Not original to me but it's been called, and I would also call it, 'artificial stupidity' .
