. Economics is still a rich man’s club: Global authorship inequality A new paper by @ErnestAigner, Jacob Greenspon, and @rodrikdani reveals striking and persistent inequalities in who gets to publish in top economics journals. Note: Some of the comments below are mine, not authors The chart shows the share of authorship in economics journals from 1985 to 2021, divided by journal quality tiers (Top 10, Top 11-25, etc.) and author affiliation. USA (purple), Other Advanced economies (green), and Developing countries (yellow). - USA remains dominant, especially in the very top journals (Top 10 and Top 11-25), holding 50–80% of authorship, though it has declined slightly over time. - Other Advanced countries (Western Europe, Canada, Japan, Australia, NZ) have steadily increased their share, particularly in mid-to-high tier journals. - Developing countries have very low representation across all tiers. Their share stays below 10% in top journals and only shows a modest increase in lower-ranked journals (100+). Top-tier journals are still heavily dominated by authors from the USA and other rich countries. Researchers from developing countries are largely excluded from the most prestigious outlets and mostly publish in lower-ranked journals. This supports the paper’s main message: geographic inequality in economics publishing remains strong and has barely improved in elite journals. Some unpleasant causes and some consequences that could lead to this situation (some parts of them do not come from an article). 1. Financial side and competition: The article does not cover this directly, but the “publish or perish” culture in academia makes publication counts and top-journal appearances the key factors for jobs, promotions, funding, and university rankings. This creates intense competition not between countries, but between universities and individual researchers. Prestigious institutions gain more resources, while networks and hierarchies disadvantage newcomers. For researchers, higher quality publications mean more revenue and funding 2. Non-blind peer review: Non-blind (open) peer review increases transparency and accountability. However, it can also raise status bias, revenge reviews, and decisions based on reputation. This particularly harms disadvantaged groups in prestige-driven fields. 3. Working papers: Many economics articles are first posted as working papers on NBER, SSRN, or RePEc. This provides early feedback, priority claims, and citations. More importantly, open posting lets authors indirectly signal who wrote the paper (and whether it comes from inside or outside a network), even in blind review. Papers from prestigious institutions or circles often have better acceptance chances, strengthening network inequalities and geographic gaps. 4. Journals as group platforms: Some top journals become controlled by specific schools, networks, or theoretical groups and turn into their own discussion platforms. This “capture” lets certain topics, methods, and authors dominate while marginalizing outsiders. 5. Networks and hierarchies “Once networks and hierarchies are established, it becomes difficult to break into them". Researchers connected to prestigious institutions have a clear advantage, while newcomers, especially those from developing countries, face significant disadvantages. 6. Quality control vs. geography: Even when article quality is held constant, papers from developing countries are significantly less likely to be accepted in top journals. This points to potential biases in the review process. 7. Field-specific effects: Even in fields such as development economics and international economics, which one would expect to feature more Global South voices, the share of authors from developing countries remains surprisingly low. 8. Citation gap: Articles by authors from developing countries receive fewer citations than similar-quality papers by authors from advanced economies. This creates a visibility and impact disadvantage. In short, the publishing system is driven by financial incentives and institutional networks, deepening geographic inequalities. This is why calls for reform, more balanced evaluation, open science, and reduced publication pressure, are growing. Including AI in evaluation processes can also prevent some of these issues. Valve co-founder Gabe Newell is funding the construction of the RV11000, a deep-sea research ship worth nearly €700 million (around $815 million).
