I’ve been part of the Meebits community for a while, so this one feels personal. Cera @cera_ai has partnered with @MeebitCompany to embody our Core Five mentors through selected Meebits. This gives persistent creative intelligence a body — a figure an artist can return to over time as they develop ideas, work through uncertainty, and stay with the practice. One of the things I've noticed after decades of making work is that artistic growth rarely comes from working harder. More often it comes from finding ways to interrupt your own certainty. A few habits have helped me. 1. Looking at work in progress with people whose opinions I trust. Not because they have better taste than I do, but because they can see things I cannot. Every artist develops blind spots. A trusted conversation often reveals assumptions that have become invisible through familiarity. 2. Spending time with artists outside my medium. Photographers can learn a great deal from painters. Painters can learn from musicians. Writers can learn from architects. Different disciplines wrestle with similar questions in different forms, and those translations often generate new possibilities. 3. Reading things that have nothing to do with photography. Some of the most important influences on my work have come from philosophy, history, science, literature, and technology. Creative breakthroughs often arrive indirectly. The wider your field of reference, the richer your practice becomes. 4. Following an idea before I understand where it leads. Not every idea needs to justify itself at the outset. Some of the most rewarding projects begin as curiosities rather than plans. Learning to tolerate uncertainty is an important part of maintaining a living practice. 5. Returning to projects that initially felt like failures. Distance changes perception. Work that seems unsuccessful in one moment may reveal something valuable months or years later. Sometimes what we call failure is simply an idea that arrived before we were ready for it. 6. Asking better questions instead of looking for better answers. Artists often become fixated on solutions. I've found that progress usually begins with questions. A strong question can sustain years of inquiry. An answer often closes the conversation too quickly. 7. Listening carefully when multiple people notice the same thing in the work. Individual opinions are easy to dismiss. Patterns are harder to ignore. When several thoughtful people independently point toward the same strength or weakness, it is usually worth paying attention. 8. Paying attention to what surprises me. Surprise is one of the most useful signals in the creative process. It often indicates that you've moved beyond habit and entered territory that is not yet fully understood. That uncertainty is frequently where the work becomes interesting. 9. Making room for experimentation without demanding immediate results. Not every project needs to succeed. Not every experiment needs to become a body of work. Some of the most important discoveries emerge from investigations that appear unproductive at first. 10. Remaining willing to change my mind. This may be the most difficult discipline of all. Experience gives us confidence, but it can also create rigidity. The artists I continue to admire are those who remain open to revision, reinvention, and the possibility that they may be wrong. The longer I work, the less I believe that artistic development is about accumulating knowledge. It seems equally dependent on preserving curiosity. The challenge is not simply learning more.
