Africa has more billion-dollar companies than many people think. At least 365 companies operating on the continent today generate $1 billion or more in annual revenue — up from 345 in the previous 2023 count. Collectively, they now generate ~$1.5 trillion annually. A few things stand out in the updated data: • Since 2023 the number of these companies has grown modestly from 345 to 365, but their scale has grown dramatically — collective revenues are up 36% to $1.5 trillion and average revenue per company is up 32% to $4.1 billion • Much of the revenue growth has been commodity-driven: oil & gas and mining alone account for ~70% of all revenue gains • 30 companies now generate over $10B annually, up from 20 in the 2023 count • South Africa remains the hub — 42% of these companies are headquartered in Africa's largest economy, which accounts for just 13% of the continent's GDP • Africa's five largest economies — South Africa, Egypt, Nigeria, Algeria, and Morocco — together account for 50% of the continent's GDP, and 73% of these companies • All regions experienced growth in the number of these companies, but West Africa experienced the fastest growth — it now accounts for 15% of these companies, up from 10% in 2023 • The homegrown share of billion-dollar companies is growing — 55% are local African-owned corporates (up from 50% in 2023); ~28% are subsidiaries of foreign multinationals (down from ~33% in 2023) The data tells a clear story: Africa's large-company ecosystem is growing — in number, in scale, and in African ownership. These companies matter disproportionately — to tax revenues, exports, productivity, and innovation. And more of them will be built across the continent as markets mature. The question is whether the next wave of these African giants will be backed by capital as bold as the opportunity. — Afridigest Intelligence — real intelligence & advisory to win in Africa's growth markets: afridigest.com/intelligence | Follow Afridigest on LinkedIn & Instagram

IN 1989, BLACK FARMERS ACCOUNTED FOR 0.5% OF SOUTH AFRICA’S TOTAL WOOL PRODUCTION. TODAY, IN 2026, THEY ACCOUNT FOR A 16% SHARE OF PRODUCTION I am sitting in the audience at the National Wool Growers Association Congress here in Jeffreys Bay. The rain is pouring outside, and it’s chilly in the big hall we are in at Mentors Country Estate. Even more chilling are the insights we have just received from Professor Johann Kirsten of Stellenbosch University. Prof Kirsten is one of South Africa’s most eminent agricultural economists, and his words should always be taken with necessary reverence. This morning, he took us through 100 years of formal structures in South Africa's wool industry. I will find time to reflect more on his speech at a later stage, but I do want to raise a few points from his talk. Among other things, he reminded us that wool has always been part of the South African economy. He stated that “Wool has always been part of the agricultural economy of South Africa and the Cape Colony. In 1866, wool production was responsible for 71% of the GDP of the Cape Colony”. Of course, as other industries grew, this changed, and the South African economy is now more advanced. But it is always important to remember just how important this industry has been over time. Still, the wool industry remains vital to South Africa’s farming economy. For example, wool has been among the top 10 agricultural products exported by South Africa over the last hundred years. More fascinating is the story of how the NWGA, with government financial assistance, commercialised Wool production in the communal areas of the Eastern Cape. This deliberate effort to bring black growers into the commercial export value chain is often underappreciated! For example, in 1989, black farmers accounted for 0.5% of South Africa’s total wool production. Today, in 2026, they account for a 16% share of production. Still, this is an undercount as production volumes of black farmers on freehold land in other parts of the country are not included in this statistic. My guess is that it is probably exceeding 20%! This is encouraging progress, and continuous collaboration between organised agriculture and the government is key. Improving genetics and infrastructure, and addressing stock theft, are among the key interventions. Improving the genetics and quality of sheep farming and wool production in the Eastern Cape, Free State, and the Northern Cape will help the wool industry increase exports. There is solid demand from China. This would also bring much-needed economic improvement in rural South Africa. Imagine the impact of better quality, better price and bigger volumes on the income of rural families. Instead of around R300 million per annum, these growers can bring a potential R1 billion to rural areas. In a session that I moderated, we focused on “inclusive and sustainable sheep economy”. In this session, we heard from various new-entrant commercial farmers, government officials, and production advisors, who shared their first-hand experiences and envisioned the future of this industry. The key point that came out was the need to focus on breeding, address biosecurity breaches, deal with stock theft, and improve land governance. These are some of the constraints the farmers raised in our discussion, amongst other things. --Wandile Sihlobo is the Presidential Envoy on Agriculture and Land. He is also the chief economist of the Agricultural Business Chamber of South Africa, and a senior research fellow in the Department of Agricultural Economics at Stellenbosch University.
How do most non technical people expect technology to improve user experience? Taking a snapshot of your screen, tracking what you watch is what enables the smart TV to suggest new movies and TV shows. It's a win-win IMO.
Breaking: Your smart TV takes a screenshot of your screen twice every second and sells what it sees. It is called ACR, and it has been running since you set the TV up. Texas already sued over it. Here is how to turn it off in under 2 minutes:
The Apollo Guidance Computer had: • 4 KB of RAM • 72 KB of storage • A clock speed of 1.024 MHz Your iPhone 16: • 8 GB RAM • 512 GB storage • up to 4.04 GHz. The iPhone is roughly 100,000,000x more powerful. And yet, the AGC landed humans on the Moon six times with zero crashes. Here's why: the software was written with constraints so tight that bugs had nowhere to hide. Margaret Hamilton's team coded in machine language, directly. No abstraction layers. No frameworks. No dependencies. Every byte was deliberate. We didn't go to the Moon despite having weak computers. We went because weak computers forced engineers to be extraordinary.
EMPLOYERS CAN'T FIND READY TALENT South Africa’s unemployment rate has climbed to 32.7%, with 345,000 jobs lost in the first quarter of 2026 and 8.1 million people now unemployed. Youth remain the hardest hit, with unemployment among 15- to 34-year-olds reaching 45.8%. While sectors such as manufacturing, mining and agriculture added jobs, many employers say they cannot find candidates with the practical skills needed for available roles. Businesses are increasingly investing in learnerships, workplace training and digital skills programmes to bridge the gap between education and employment. I am pissed, Dangote recently said he imports workers from India because Nigerians don’t know how to operate his plant systems. I need him to say that again, slowly. Me and 7 of my guys use and chew these exact softwares daily. Let me break down what runs Dangote Cement and who actually knows this stack and flex my knowledge a bit: SAP ERP is the brain of the entire operation. It tracks every bag of cement from raw limestone to the truck leaving the gate. Inventory, procurement, finance, payroll, all of it running in one system. We use it. SAP HANA is the database engine under SAP. It processes millions of records in real time so management can make decisions without waiting 4 hours for a report. It is the reason their finance team is not still using Excel. We use it. SAP Ariba handles procurement. Every vendor, every supply contract, every purchase order flows through Ariba before a kobo leaves the company. We use it. OpenText ECM manages documents. Engineering drawings, compliance certificates, invoices, all stored, tracked and retrieved digitally. Without it they are drowning in paper. We use it. AutoCAD designs the physical plant. Every kiln, conveyor belt and silo you see at Obajana was drawn on AutoCAD before a single brick was laid. We use it. Nutanix is the infrastructure layer. It is what keeps SAP HANA running without crashing. The server backbone behind everything. We know it. Freshdesk manages internal and customer support tickets. Azure SQL stores structured data. Veritas NetBackup makes sure nothing gets lost if a server dies. We know all of it. So when Dangote says he cannot find Nigerians who understand his systems, the question is not whether we exist. The question is whether he is looking, or whether he already decided where to look before he started.
Uganda's problem is now the political class. They are the driving force of the country and not the business community or the professional community. The problem is that this class isn't as productive and cannot be a driver of development!

African startups raised US$711 million in Q1 2026, Egypt (US$154M), South Africa (US$134M), and Kenya (US$98M) alone attracted US$386 million more than half of all startup funding raised across the continent during the quarter. Nigeria followed with US$94M,
It's hard for me to explain to those outside #Uganda just how irritated the Ugandans are to be lumped in with DRC for the #Ebola epidemic. As of this writing, there have been hundreds of deaths and over 1000 cases in Congo, whereas Uganda has had only 9 cases -- three Congolese, four medical workers who treated them, one driver who drove them, and one other known contact. Only one person has died in Uganda, a Congolese. So when WHO and Al Jazeera talks about the Ebola epidemic in "Congo and Uganda," it's like saying because there are wildfires in California, you should cancel a trip to the Grand Canyon because some Californians lit a campfire there. Yes, it is possible it *could* spread and you have to be vigilant, but these two situations are nowhere near the same magnitude. As of this writing, the only Ugandan death has been the tourism industry.
China and India have lifted hundreds of millions of their citizens out of poverty through market-oriented economic reforms. Yet in our country, business is still too often treated as an enemy rather than a partner for development. Why can’t we learn from their success? #ProudlySA
@Omri_Cassiem Yes but the budget would be growing the economy at a faster rate if most of the income was directed towards production. Secondly, people shouldn't be on grants forever. They should be given targets e.g getting employed within a time frame.
South Africa is stuck in Marxist welfare economic policies mixed with free market policies. They then spend most of their time blaming "neo-liberalism" for their economic woes. Meanwhile, the rest of the first growing economies are 💯 neoliberal.
This has been coming for a while. I was invited to Morocco circa 2018/19 when the government was launching their financial district. I have travelled there more than 5 times since. It was clear then, and it is now, that the government of Morocco had a clear plan & every
@MmuiWabatho Neo liberal is Egypt, Uganda, Rwanda, Nigeria, Ethiopia etc. South Africa is at best mixed which isn't bad. But the state does not have the capacity and discipline of the Chinese or Ethiopians.
@CrylessSeemore Rwanda, Ethiopia, Uganda, Egypt etc are all neo liberal. Egypt is directed by the WB. A few years ago, Egypts economy was less than 100 billion. It's now the top 3 in Africa.
@SedikoR It's mixed. The welfare system of giving people grants
All the fast growing economies in Africa are 100% neoliberal. In fact most of them have economic conditions imposed by the WB and IMF. None are sociist or welfare driven. This suggests that SA's economic choices are the the problem.
True. The ANC is stubborn and stuck in the past. But if they just checked all the first growing economies in Africa are actually real neoliberal economies. Most of those countries can't even raise capital unless through imf and wb imposed conditions

Not to be that guy but Ghana's government has been hyper nationalistic. Before all this scandal started, the government was trying to force dstv to reduce prices in Ghana because Ghanaians couldn't afford. Also bbc.com/news/articles/…
