The Shifting Sands of SocialFi. Beyond the Hype, Where Lies the True Value? @friendtech, @NewBitcoinCity and @StarsArenacom SHOULD be plummeting in value… What you need to know.. ⬇️ --------------------------------- The recent exodus from SocialFi platforms like FriendTech to rivals like New Bitcoin City and Stars Arena is emblematic of a broader issue. The SocialFi ecosystem remains in its embryonic phase, yet it already feels like a convoluted roller coaster, with platforms chasing users and investors chasing multipliers. Many users are missing the forest for the trees. The surge of activity on FriendTech, from its initial days of promise to the current state of disillusionment, is a cautionary tale. At its core, FriendTech and its contemporaries are basic apps, gated chats that leverage keys for access. What makes an app valuable? Genuine user engagement and a strong foundational principle. Yet, most gravitate towards these platforms not for their intrinsic value but for the tantalising potential of a short-term financial gain. Worse… Whilst major more reputable VC’s passed on Friend Tech. Their most significant backers, Paradigm, are a VC entrenched in less than ideal traditions. Their history of blockchain investments paints a mixed picture, and is highlighted by their focus on short term gain, cash grabs and at best faulty, at worst immoral airdrops, where they pump a token and get out before investors even have the possibility to. You only need to look at their foray into Art Gobblers and Blur. Not all that glitters is golden.. VC’s allegiance typically remains to profit, not necessarily the product's long-term viability and this couldn’t be made more clear in the case of Friend Tech where communication, growth of the team, and innovation has been stunted, whilst other competitors race ahead. Another taking point is that Paradigm’s team are openly inactive on the platform and this makes sense given the tiny TVL in comparison to their bigger investments. This brings us to the competitors, there’s a reason why @Vombatus_eth leaving FT for NBC, Stars Arena’s initial appearance or NBC’s continual improvements don’t make that much of an impact in the Total Value Locked on Friend Tech. It’s simple, massive fees disincentivise users to trade and the allure of an airdrop essentially holds users to keep money on a platform they barely use or in fact see the value in. But this isn’t sustainable for many reasons, not least that the lack of fees ultimately stunts the viability of the company, unless of course drastic improvements are made. This is where you see the influencers who have popped up in this space get critically confused and succumb to the victimhood of their own egos but getting sucked in to the relevancy they have that is tied to this platform, and their better judgement, in farming an airdrop that loses relevancy by the day, just because they are already heavily invested. Similar to early NFT project founders complaining about royalties when they aren’t innovating, these influencers don’t want such an easy gravy train to stop rolling. They tout a 3, 3 farming strategy, where users buy each other's keys to farm points, encapsulating the hollow core of many of these platforms. It's a strategy rooted not in genuine platform use, but in gaming the system for ephemeral gains. Switching from one platform to another might offer a momentary respite, but it doesn't address the root ailment: a lack of genuine user engagement and value proposition. The small migration from FriendTech to New Bitcoin City is merely a symptom of a deeper issue. True value is foundational, not fleeting. And while illusions might bewitch the uninformed, those who discern know better. So we have a platform that buys engagement, which does not equal engagement… And we have early influencers hanging on to their 5 minutes of fame spouting uninformed nonsense in the attempt of remaining relevant. @0xCaptainLevi said ’It is up to us to write the next chapters of @friendtech’… And @DrgStefanescu: "If the tourists have gone, we can farm more efficiently." Well.. It is up to the platform to create something people want to use naturally, not those on the platform… and in terms of the absolute incompetence of Dragos’ comment…. Such a sentiment underscores the problem. The longevity of a platform should never hinge on the efficiency of farming but rather on genuine user engagement and real-world value. An airdrop means nothing without genuine user engagement in the long term, especially from a VC that is openly exiting positions ahead of users. You only need to go as far as to listen to any of the usual cronies spaces to understand the lack of understanding of basic economic theories as they lament over ‘what can be done’ in the hopes that @0xRacerAlt hears them and puts out another mysterious tweet instead of building a more sustainable platform… We are in the midst of the bear and people are desperate to jump onto whatever’s next, meaning anything new gets inflated beyond what is realistic, and nonsense thrives (see memecoins). For us crypto natives, SocialFi is exciting, but it’s important to remember, that this does not grow without real imporements. To the everyday person outside of crypto, Friend Tech looks like, well… A terribly designed and executed application. In conclusion, as we traverse the nascent world of SocialFi, @0xMakesy had it right, it's essential to differentiate between genuine platforms with a real value proposition and those that merely ride the wave of the latest trend. True value is enduring and is built on solid foundational principles and there is potential for this here, with some real and continuous innovation… But we’re not seeing that. SocialFi will thrive, however, not like this, and a lot of us are part of the problem. The theme is the same as every theme in irresponsible crypto degenerate behaviour, the overarching theme that YOU are not contributing to society, to being impatient, to seeking unjustified, quick gains.. So what do we say… Choose value and long term sustainability.. The Game awaits..
