This week, we've written to leaders across the healthcare system about our preparations to regulate physician associates (PAs) and anaesthesia associates (AAs). This includes information about how we’ve worked with organisations representing patients, doctors, PAs, AAs, employers and educators to develop our approach. Over the coming weeks, we’re reminding all physician associates (PAs) and anaesthesia associates (AAs) that registration will open on 16 December 2024. PAs and AAs on the voluntary registers will be invited to apply for registration by the end of January 2025. We're encouraging PAs and AAs not on the voluntary registers to apply as soon as they can from 16 December 2024. In less than a month we will bring physician associates (PAs) and anaesthesia associates (AAs) into regulation – a milestone that will help strengthen patient safety and public trust in these professions. You can read our latest letter updating system leaders on progress on our website: gmc-uk.org/news/news-arch… Within it, we shared that: - We’re contacting PAs and AAs on the relevant voluntary registers to let them know the fee they’ll pay when they register with us. We expect the fee to be £320, subject to approval by our Council next month. More information can be found on our website: gmc-uk.org/pa-and-aa-regu… - We’ve been engaging directly with PAs and AAs to help them understand the standards they’ll need to meet when they gain registration with us. - Our future public facing registers will make it easy to identify whether an individual is a doctor, PA, or AA with clear and prominent labelling. - We’re preparing to publish our report on the outcome of our consultation on the proposed rules, standards and guidance for regulating PAs and AAs in December before regulation begins.

PA scope of practice is individualised. The recently released documents by BMA and RCGP are advisory and are not bound by law. An update from GMC is anticipated.

I bet there are many who actually work with experienced PAs who are of same view.
@theveindoc I’m certain you’re right, @theveindoc. Twitter is full of confirmation bias when it comes to the notion that PAs are unsafe, but after an extensive witch hunt, there really isn’t the evidence base to substantiate such a claim. It’s not about safety.
