Roller Derby is fighting back against a Nassau County Executive who's trying to force them to ban trans women. They're also showing that the values of a counter-cultural, amateur, defiantly inclusive women's contact sport represents the best athletics has to offer.
Today on Assigned, this is a story about fighting anti-trans policies, sure. But it's about much more than that! It's about the fight over what sports mean, and the queer women fighting to define it for themselves, against the dominant culture. assignedmedia.org/breaking-news/…
@assignedmedia imagine telling a bunch of roller derby girls that they're "too weak" to compete with trans women 🤭
@assignedmedia @JulieDiCaro Omg. It’s roller derby. My goodness. Roller derby is badass stuff. What a maroon.
@assignedmedia @DrtySexyHistory $10 says that dude has never watched a minute of the sport he's playing like he wants to protect.
@assignedmedia It’s not an inclusive women’s sport. It’s an inclusive mixed sex sport. The issue is barring males, irrespective of their gender identity. Gender identity is irrelevant to sports performance.
@assignedmedia If it’s a WOMAN’S contact sport then keep men out of it. They don’t belong in women’s sports. It’s not inclusive to exclude the opinions and wishes of women. Stay out of our sports & spaces.
@assignedmedia It was a matter of time before they went after leagues that are explicitly pro lgbt. They want to dismantle acceptance in the lgbt community. Funny how terfs are almost always conservative straight, cisgender men
@assignedmedia Derby girls rule!
@assignedmedia Yay this is my sport! (although not my league).
