and provide more regular updates on the potential threat. While we can never be 100% certain of what Mother Nature might do, here are some data points I look at: 1.Lake Isabella dam is at about 344,000 acre-feet of storage. Capacity of the dam before spill is 568,500. (2/4)

There’s been a lot of talk and some worry about the Kern River flows and potential flooding in Bakersfield. At last night’s City Council Meeting I made a referral directing City Staff to communicate to the public more clearly what we are doing to prevent flooding (1/4).

The Vice-Mayor serves as the leader of and spokesperson for the City Council, and is responsible for making appointments to all committees. I’m eager to work collaboratively with council members to meet our city’s challenges and opportunities thoughtfully.

Thank you to my colleagues on the Bakersfield City Council for electing me as Vice-Mayor last night. It is an honor to have an opportunity to lead the Council for the next two years, especially given that I will be the very first Latino Vice-Mayor in Bakersfield’s history.

Today marks the 2-year anniversary of the Brundage Lane Navigation Center, the 150-bed low barrier navigation center. To date, BLNC has made 181 permanent housing placements! Tonight, because of our investment, over 230 people are off the street and sleeping under a roof.

Today, Bakersfield City Council’s Budget Committee reviewed recommendations to award over $10.5 million to construct 424 new affordable housing units in our City. Thanks to our new Affordable Housing Trust, we are accelerating efforts to tackle the affordable housing crisis.

For over two years, I’ve been advocating for a Chronic Nuisance Property Toolkit, with stronger strategies to address both residential and commercial nuisance properties. It’s time City staff accelerate their work and bring to the full City Council draft ordinances ASAP!

Last night’s fire in Downtown Bakersfield is the clearest example as to why the City needs a Vacant Building Ordinance for Commercial Buildings, which would place stricter requirements for downtown vacant buildings- including installation of fire protection systems.

-$1.6 Million for the MLK Park Re-Imagining -$700,000 to rehab Oleander Ave, between Brundage and California -$150,000 to design improvements to MLK Boulevard to SR-58 -$300,000 for alley and street improvements in disadvantaged neighborhoods -$250,000 for crosswalks repainting

-$3.75 Million for Chester Avenue Corridor Enhancements -$500,000 for Traffic Calming Projects -$1 Million for streetlight improvements -$900,000 for Jefferson Park new restrooms and pool improvements -$1.25 for public art -$510,000 for Beale Park Courts upgrade

Tonight, the #Bakersfield City Council adopted the FY23 Budget with many initiatives I’m very excited about, including: - $400,757 for Mental Health Differential Response to work w/BPD -$1.8 million more for the Brundage Lane Navigation Center -$775,00 for Illegal Dumping pickup

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced that the City Bakersfield will receive a $500,000 investment as part of its work to revitalize communities. The grant will spur economic revitalization, and create jobs by cleaning up “brownfield” properties!

Myth: The City is “asleep at the wheel” -not doing a thing about litter and the effects of encampments. Reality: The City launched a Rapid Response Team in 2019, working in tandem with outreach teams. In 2021, they rec’d 6217 complaints and cleaned 5.93 million pounds of trash

Myth: Shelters are just a band-aids and doesn’t get to the root causes of homelessness Reality: Shelters provide opportunities for individuals to stabilize, working with professionals to develop a path towards housing. As a result, BLNC permanently housed over 135 individuals!

Myth: Nobody wants to go to the shelter. Reality: All beds at BLNC are occupied, and we have operated close to full occupancy since day 1. This week’s Point-in-Time count showed that the number of “unsheltered” homeless ppl went down while “sheltered” homeless numbers went up.

Myth: City of Bakersfield “doesn’t do anything” about homelessness. Reality: Over the past two years, the City has invested in constructing 40 beds at the Mission, 70 beds at the Bakersfield Homeless Center, 150 beds at BLNC. We are adding 119 new beds to BLNC this year!

This evening, the Brundage Lane Navigation Center made it’s 100th permanent housing placement! 🙌🏾🎉👍🏽 100 women and men who are off the street and in a place of their own. 100 souls who are home for the holidays. BLNC is doing some incredible work. Congratulations to the team.
