Mine, too. And the playwriting classes were in the English Dept. I was the only MFA to have an actual production of my thesis script…because I was already teaching in the Theatre Dept.

I didn't submit to Joel this year, but I did last year - and I hired him to edit a manuscript that now has a bunch of full requests. That winner is in for a treat of great feedback.
You know, literary agents, I was just thinking that I have such a light week next week that it would be an ideal time for one of those full requests to turn into an "I'd love to schedule a call to chat more about your manuscript" emails. I am quite at my leisure.
We're just saying the lines from the book and staring at each other. Almost like an episode of General Hospital. But this still the era of treating TV like theater.
This 1980 Pride and Prejudice TV film has a remarkably boring start. Reminds me of Little House on the Prairie. But it has Elizabeth Garvie!
The reader is left feeling like they had to do all the heavy lifting by arriving at the book with compassion for the MC who didn't do the obvious thing and yell "Just forking tell me" and the dying ancestor who wouldn't spit it out.
The investigation takes 2 or 3 predictable turns, but the reader brain constantly says "they could have told the MC on page 1!" To handle the objection, the author must infuse coercion or tragedy into the backstory so the dying grammy can say "It was too hard to tell you."
Literary trope I'm over: "I must tell you this secret but I can't tell you - because the truth belongs to multiple people and it isn't *just* my story to tell." It's fake tension as a premise, and it clings to Historical Fiction (especially WWII) like stinky algae.
