@alicekeeler As for the 8 mathematical practices, no.s 1, 3, 4, and 5 are only possible when you know some maths (& notice here I say "know some maths" & not "know how to do some stuff"), 2 is a big reason to be looking at maths in the abstract &, again, 7 is why I wrote #ConceptualMaths
@MrMattock Still doesn't make writing on a computer screen the holy grail.
@alicekeeler Now admittedly I didn't watch the video, so if they reference this as the "holy grail" then they are wrong in that regard. In responding to your tweet your main issue seemed to be the lack of context, which you suggested would lead to a lack of engagement. What I am saying is...
@MrMattock My main issue is every time someone says "oh that is good for math" ... it is because they can write on the screen. Not actually teach well. It's a commentary about technology.
@alicekeeler That was your first line, but it doesn't seem to be what the rest of your original tweet went on to say. You seemed to be lamenting the lack of context and saying it is boring because of that. That is what I was responding to. I completely agree that software allowing...
@alicekeeler ...pupils to collaborate on a problem is nothing special unless they have something worth collaborating on. With that I am 100% with you. Just out of interest, what does DOK1 mean? I am assuming it is a term used in the States that I haven't come across.
@MrMattock DOK is Depth of Knowledge. It is the critical thinking level of the problem. @robertkaplinsky is the expert on this. His openmiddle.com are DOK 2 and DOK 3 level math problems. He has some great charts showing the difference.
@alicekeeler @robertkaplinsky Is there a graphic or post that explains these? I can see DOK2 is Skills and Concepts, whilst DOK3 is Strategic Thinking, but I can't see anything about DOK1, nor about what makes one of these more "deep" than the other.
@alicekeeler @robertkaplinsky Actually this is what I was looking for, perfectly clear distinction. Is this something that Robert came up with? Is there any empirical evidence behind it? It feels a bit "Blooms Taxonomy" to me, if it is meant to suggest that we should avoid level 1.
@MrMattock @robertkaplinsky I'll give you one of my favorite quotes from @burgess_shelley "Live in DOK 2 and DOK 3, Visit DOK 1 and DOK 4"
@alicekeeler @robertkaplinsky @burgess_shelley Yes, but does that actually work? Is there anything that suggests this is better than any alternatives? Also, is this image better? It comes directly from the book. This would seem to suggest that you build from 1 to 4?
