I am personally opposed to the idea of the state setting a code of ethics for journalists. Especially if it will determine who gets media cards, and therefore access. In my view this is a form of state control. The code should be formed and overseen by industry.

These are the folks behind the code. The editors are all from Jabatan Penerangan, not journalists. AFAIK engagement w some stakeholders was only towards end of the drafting. There were concerns. The final code wasn't shown to stakeholders.
Sorry, just want to confirm some matters as i think ur argument is valid. As far as we know, Etika Kewartawanan ni memang dah ada since 1989. Meaning we have been following this since 1989. This time around, gov nak tambah baik lagi sebab zaman 1989 dulu tak ambik kira laporan atas talian. Regarding the code ethics by JAPEN, its their bidang kuasa since day one kan? They are the one yg pegang kuasa untuk beri dan batal kad media? Correct me if i'm wrong. 🙏
@aidilarazak Aidila, not to detract from your point but isn't it still a form of control even if the code is formed and overseen by the industry especially if it has powers to grant/revoke access to media cards? Why give any body, state of fraternity based, that power?
@aidilarazak And yet, so many (purposely) misleading headlines published by big news portal. And what the industry did nothing
