"AI is not inherently poised to usurp any roles. It can do no such thing."
In light of the launch (and subsequent defrocking) of AI chatbot ‘Fr Justin’, @nathanmladin explores how we can effectively harness AI while preserving human relationships.theosthinktank.co.uk/comment/2024/0…
Today I learned a really helpful idea that originated in human factors research: "learned carelessness," the tendency for human beings to uncritically accept guidance from machines and computers.

I continue to think the greatest risk of A(S|G)I is not that it will actually be achieved, but the dream of it being achieved.
Magic isn't real, but the dream of magic is real and leads to real addiction, real exploitation, and violation of the dignity of persons and creation.
One of the really under-appreciated things about Strong Towns is that their prescription for urban design is not about a set of preferences (walkability or whatever, inevitably tinged by class and fashion) but something much wonkier and more important: municipal economics.

Europe has long been my biggest question mark about the smartphones-and-mental-health correlation. I don't think it defeats the argument but it certainly complicates it.

Seeing a lot of liberal commentary assuming that the conservative wing of the Supreme Court is going to give Trump total immunity, and that they are all in this to protect him. I don’t think that tracks at all with the lines of questioning. Most will rule against him.
For decades, social science has 'known' that women are more religious than men.
However, if you track the religiosity of young adults - something really interesting happened.
Women are more likely to claim no religious affiliation than men.
It started around 2016.
Really appreciate @rebeccaonion’s review of @CRPakaluk’s Hannah’s Children.
I’ve seldom read a piece where reviewer and writer move in such different worlds and the reviewer brings such open-hearted curiosity to the piece.

Here’s that Professor of Economics who was arrested at Emory university and everyone seems to think is some poor victim of police repression. Caroline Fohlin ADMITS she hit a police officer on the head. Even professors are not allowed to assault cops. Yes, even professors.
@ahc I've said for a long time that AI doesn't need to actually become a sentient God. All that is required is that people believe it is a sentient God. Faith alone is what matters. It is only a matter of time before AI is worshipped as God.

Back when I was teaching first amendment jurisprudence, I regularly taught Eisgruber. He's absolutely correct here. Free speech doesn't mean you get to disrupt the university's essential activities.

@CharlesFLehman@lymanstoneky Secretly it’s the inverse of Latinx, used descriptively by people outside the core community and then genuinely embraced to the point of uselessness.

On encampments, free speech, and ‘time, place, and manner’ rules on university campuses dailyprincetonian.com/article/2024/0…
BREAKING: The FTC just banned non-compete agreements.
The Federal Trade Commission has issued a final rule making it illegal for bosses to make workers sign noncompetes in any scenario, and voiding nearly all existing noncompetes.
This is a game changer for American workers.
A good piece and I agree with basically all of it though I'd add that like many things it was made worse by covid. Three years after I got vaccinated, I *still* get emails requesting laxer pedagogy prefaced with "in these unprecedented times." open.substack.com/pub/matthewygl…
One reason various on-campus controversies are so impossible to resolve is that contemporary colleges don't really have a clear mission that would serve to structure arguments about how you should handle specific situations.

There are an increasing number of Americans who:
describe their religion as "nothing in particular"
partisanship as independent/other
ideology as not sure
and have a low level of educational attainment.
They are just done - with everything.

If evidence from your therapy leads you to a belief in demons, congratulations, you've just joined the consensus of every major human civilization; the dubious part is assuming that your therapy is equipped to manage them.

There’s a reason this new rule was delayed again and again: the Biden administration knew that it was stretching the law beyond its breaking point. At a time when American higher education is in crisis, with a drastic…
