Jorge Mateo has played 74 major league innings in center field before, of course. First time since 2021 tonight. Mateo: "It's been long time, but I feel good. Not bad at all. ... I don't have too many times in center field, but I think it [his first step] is going to be there." twitter.com/afkostka/statu…

Kyle Gibson: "Too many times in my career I've given away innings when I was younger just by letting the first couple innings dictate the rest of the game. .. You've still got a job in the regular season to get as deep as you can, and you gotta try to get to that 100-pitch mark." twitter.com/afkostka/statu…

Kyle Gibson said his pointer finger slipped on a slider in the first inning and hit his thumb, cutting it. He had a bit of hanging skin he tried to bite off, but the Orioles took care of that in the mound visit. He says he’s all good

Kyle Gibson rebounded from two three-run homers with aplomb, retiring eight of his final 11, with two double plays in there. His line: 4 2/3 innings, six runs, 11 hits, one walk and two strikeouts. His day is now done

Since Kyle Gibson conceded a second-inning three-run homer, he has pitched two clean innings. In the third and fourth, Gibson faced the minimum, with a double play canceling out the lone baserunner.

When Anthony Santander reflects on the WBC, he thinks of the video of his mother celebrating one of his homers. "We go there to represent our country, try to take happiness to our people, make our family, our hometown, proud. It’s totally different.” thebaltimorebanner.com/sports/orioles…

Ramón Urías has been scratched from the lineup. Terrin Vavra is now playing second. In the clubhouse earlier, Urías said the bruise of his thumb wasn’t a big concern twitter.com/afkostka/statu…

More Hyde: • Dillon Tate (forearm strain) is on schedule. Throws side session today • Hyde is hopeful Mychal Givens (knee) can break camp with Orioles, but Givens would likely need a back field session before • Very comfortable with Santander at first

Brandon Hyde on Grayson Rodriguez: "So far this spring, he’s had a bad inning almost every time out.” But at the same time,"you have to remember he's a really young player. Sometimes it's OK to go through some rough patches to know you have to make some adjustments."

Apart from one tough inning, Grayson Rodriguez was solid again in his final spring training start. But it's that one tough inning — replicated in three straight starts — that casts a cloudier outlook for where Rodriguez begins the year: thebaltimorebanner.com/sports/orioles…

Cedric Mullins on the WBC atmosphere: "Those games out there felt like — I could feel it in my chest. It was one of those moments, the crowd was so involved throughout the entire game, and the energy they brought carried throughout the entire stadium."

Grayson Rodriguez said "today was probably my best start. I definitely felt the best," despite a five-run third. "As a pitcher, you want to go out and compete, throw well. But also in the spring, it doesn't matter as much as it does in the season." He's focusing on positives.

Anthony Santander records his first hit of Orioles spring training, driving in Adley Rutschman with an RBI single. Santander had some big hits for Venezuela in the interim, of course
