The Man Behind the Gorillas The gorilla has become one of Uganda’s greatest symbols. Some of us have trekked gorillas. Even if you haven’t, every time you’ve held a UGX 50,000 note, often called “Ezike” (gorilla), you’ve held a piece of our national heritage. Yet we rarely pause to ask: Who made it possible for us to encounter these magnificent animals? Very few Ugandans know people like Mzee Medad. He was among the very first Ugandans entrusted with habituating mountain gorillas in Bwindi. When Bwindi was declared a national park in 1991, gorillas had learned to fear people after years of poaching. Trust had to be rebuilt, patiently, day after day. It took two years before the first habituated family could be visited. And the work was anything but easy. Bwindi is immense. The gorillas did not wait in one place. Each day, Mzee Medad and his colleagues entered the forest, searching, observing and returning again and again until these remarkable primates slowly accepted their presence. Their work extended beyond habituation. They carved the forest trails that thousands of visitors now walk without a second thought. In Buhoma, many of the magnificent trees that line the area were planted by those same early teams. Mzee Medad was among them. He went on to become one of the first guides with @ugwildlife, serving for 31 years before retiring. Today, he continues to pass on his knowledge by training a new generation of guides. These are the people who quietly shaped Uganda’s conservation story. They rarely seek recognition, yet their legacy is woven into one of our nation’s greatest treasures. Conservation and culture go hand in hand. The Batwa people, the original forest dwellers of the Great Lakes region, carry generations of knowledge about living in harmony with nature. UWA continues to Protect biodiversity, respecting and preserving the cultures.

Updates!! Dr. Bashir Ajer- representing the Minister of @MTWAUganda as Chief Guest at the 1st National #Biodiversity and #conservation #Research , emphasized the need to keep the fire of knowledge burning by ensuring that research findings are widely shared through publications and integrated into the structures of the Ministry and UWA. He noted that evidence without adaptation changes nothing and called for stronger links between research, policy, and practice. He commended researchers and academicians for generating critical knowledge that informs conservation and sustainable development. He reaffirmed the Government's commitment to supporting research, innovation, ecosystem restoration, and evidence-based conservation, stressing that research must ultimately translate into action and impact.
