Fun event at the @TexasTheatre fundraiser screening the movie Robocop. It was filmed in Dallas and featured Dallas City Hall with a CGI office building extension. Great to hear the crowd vocalize every time City Hall was in the shot, like a civic Rocky Horror Picture Show. The 500+ crowd was full of young adults who want to @savecityhall, plus a couple of old folks like me & former Mayor Mary Poss. Great job @PreserveDallas!

In 1961, a Stanford scientist let kids watch an adult punch an inflatable clown. The adult left. Without being told anything, they walked in and punched the same clown. No teaching. No reward. Just watching. The experiment explains why your kid behaves exactly like you. Just behind your forehead, there's a strip of brain that acts like the whole system's manager. It handles stopping mid-action, listening, following instructions, and controlling impulses. It finishes building around age 25, and in a 6-year-old it's barely gotten started. So when your child ignores you, the stop button often isn't there yet. The construction crew hasn't left. In the meantime, children learn by watching. Not listening. Watching. In the early 1990s, a neuroscientist named Giacomo Rizzolatti at the University of Parma found a type of brain cell called mirror neurons. These cells fire the same way whether you're doing something or watching someone else do it. In young children, this system runs wide open. Park a young child in front of their parent all day. Behavior comes through. No lesson needed. John Gottman spent 20 years on this at the University of Washington. He studied actual families. And he found that parents who listen to their kids, who sit down, let the child finish talking, and take what they say seriously, raise children who end up being better listeners, better at school, and more stable. The children weren't trained. They picked it up by watching it happen every day. The reverse works the same way. When a parent scrolls mid-conversation, or cuts the child off, or brushes them away, the child absorbs that too. Not as a lesson. As normal. The tweet calls this a mom problem. Gottman's 20 years of family data and Bandura's 1961 Stanford experiment point at whoever is doing the parenting, mom or not. What you do in front of a child is the lesson. The words you say to correct them, the warnings and lectures and reminders, barely register by comparison. Diana Baumrind tracked parenting at UC Berkeley starting in 1966. She found children raised by parents who actually listened and responded were more obedient and self-controlled than kids raised under strict rules alone. The listening comes first. The behavior follows.

For sixty years, the Beatles refused to let Hollywood tell their story. No movie about them had ever been allowed to use their actual songs. That just changed. Sam Mendes got all of it, every song and every life story, for four films costing around 400 million dollars. Getting there meant lining up the two living Beatles and the families of the two who have died, all at once. Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Sean Lennon, and Olivia Harrison each signed off. Then they did something stranger than saying yes. They told Mendes nothing was off limits, and they didn't want a flattering version. He could show the breakup and the bad blood, the parts most bands fight to keep off the screen. The shoot itself is punishing. Mendes is making four full movies back to back, around fifteen months of filming with barely a day off. Each film follows one Beatle. It covers the same stretch of years from his side, the way four people at the same party remember the night differently. Four separate writers are splitting the scripts, including the writers behind Conclave, Adolescence, and 1917. Paul Mescal plays McCartney and Harris Dickinson plays Lennon. Joseph Quinn is George, Barry Keoghan is Ringo, and Saoirse Ronan plays Paul's wife Linda. Then there is the money. Four films at roughly 100 million dollars apiece add up to about 400 million total. That is one of the priciest bets a studio has ever placed. A movie normally has to earn about two and a half times its cost just to break even, once you count the money spent on marketing. For four Beatles films, that means selling close to a billion dollars in tickets before anyone makes a cent. Movies about musicians rarely make that kind of money. The biggest one ever, the Queen film Bohemian Rhapsody, made 911 million dollars worldwide. The second biggest, Elvis, made under 290 million. The Johnny Cash film Walk the Line made 187. Sony is counting on four films landing near the very top of that list, at the same time. That same month is exactly where the gamble bites. John and Paul are the names that sell tickets on their own, and the films built around George and Ringo carry the same 100 million dollar cost. Open all four in a few short weeks, and the whole plan rests on audiences turning up for every one of them. One soft opening drags down the entire bet.
