3 months ago I started building a coding agent that runs in the cloud.
It's since written every line of code I've shipped, including itself.
Today, I'm open sourcing it. Introducing Open Agents.
It has evolved into a primary gateway for querying hardware and system capabilities from web pages.
Netscape Navigator is still available for download by the way. You can find installers on public archives online.
Microsoft implemented it for compatibility, and with Netscape’s open-sourced successor project (Mozilla), the interface survived into modern browsers. Today the navigator object is no longer just a “browser sniffer” as it was once assumed to be;
IE continued for a few more years before its support later ended in the 2020s, with mainstream support officially concluding in 2022.
Even as Netscape lost the “Browser Wars” to Internet Explorer, the navigator object became a de facto standard across browsers.
On December 28, 2007, the Netscape developers, then at AOL, announced that AOL would discontinue development of Netscape Navigator, leaving it unsupported as of March 1, 2008.
In the late 1990s, Netscape open-sourced its browser codebase under an open-source license, and the project was given the name Mozilla. This project eventually became the basis for Mozilla Firefox.
Because Microsoft bundled IE with Windows, many users stopped downloading external browsers, and Netscape’s market share began to dwindle. By about 2003, Navigator’s user base had all but disappeared.
When developing the language, Brenden added the navigator object to the window interface to give developers a way to query the state of the browser.
Around the same time, Microsoft released its own competitor, Internet Explorer (IE).
In 1995, Brendan Eich famously built JavaScript in ten days at a browser company called Netscape, whose flagship product was Netscape Navigator, a browser that dominated the market share in the mid-1990s (more than 50% share).
For a while I never gave it enough thought as to the reason behind the name navigator, but recently I decided to do a little bit of research, and it turns out there is a nice story behind the name.
If you are on PC, open your browser to a new tab, open the Developer Tools and switch to the Console tab, type "navigator." and in the autocomplete you’ll see some familiar properties - geolocation, userAgent etc.
I am definitely late to the party here but @raycast for Windows is now generally available via Microsoft Store .....FINALLY, more than 2 years now since this was first announced.
